making pots of hyacinths look festive

Have bought some hyacinths which should be out in time for xmas, but they are growing out of horrid plastic pots. What can I do to disguise the horrid plastic and make them look festive and decorative, that is easy and cheap?

haven't got any suitably sized china pots to sink them into.

OK - if you have not got any china pots... get hold of some terracotta pot from a garden centre and google painting or decoupaging pots - really easy to do using your own leftover paints or paint ample pots.

Otherwise you can go down the Blue Peter stickyback plastic route and cover the pot with that.

Or go to the charity shop and look for small baskets, put a couple of pots in them and fill gaps with sphagnum moss (garden centre or florist) and add a large bow to the handle.

Does that help?

I use hessian and tie with ribbon or lace. Looks fab, costs nowt, takes seconds.

Sue how do you stop the hessian getting wet and manky when you water the pots?

I cut it to roughly the height of the pot in long strips and wrap it around. As long as you don't over water, it doesn't tend to wick up the water (it would if it were underneath, if you wrapped the entire pot like a parcel). It works better wrapped around like a sash, if you tried to cover the lip and underneath of the pot I think it would look crap and get manky.
