Is the lens changeable? It's not clear from the ad. The big advantage of dslr's is being able to use different lenses for different effects/subjects, once you get the hang of the settings. TBH if you can't you may as well just get an ordinary compact digital unless you are going the whole hog, this is more of an inbetweener (or 'bridge') camera.

As you can tell I'm not such a big fan of the bridge camera, if he gets interested in photography he'll quickly outgrow it.

PresentsRibbonsAndMerrySantas · 08/12/2011 10:43

thanks, what would you recommend?

TBH I'm no expert, just an interested amateur.
The 2 top DsLR brands are Canon and Nikon, which ever one you start off with is the one you stick with as the extra lenses and accessories are expensive and brand specific, but saying that there's nothing to choose between them and both have their aficianados. There are other brands too but I'd go with the top 2 as the advanced lenses are better (imo)
Normally you will buy the camera body, the kit lens usually 18-55mm which a grand all rounder (and the sd card, battery and charger). All the camera bodies at entry level are pretty much the same so don't panic too much about the actual model, as time goes on it's the lenses that'll excite him to be prepared every birthday and xmas to be buying more kit.
This is the page for you here
If you're more budget conscious a good and respectable option is buying second hand, try the specialist bricks and mortar shops in your area as you have more come back and they'll usually offer a warranty.

hth!

yes, that looks a decent camera.

i have a nikon d90 and it's great.

Marne · 08/12/2011 12:08

Always go for Nikon or Canon (dont touch anything else), i made the mistake of buying a Sony and it lasted me a year before it broke and it also felt poor quality compared to the Nikon and Canon models. Never go for the cheapest option (you get what you pay for).

SinicalSal · 08/12/2011 12:09

yup that looks a great one, I've a nikon too and I love it. DH got it for me, best present I ever got, your Dh is a lucky man Xmas Smile

PresentsRibbonsAndMerrySantas · 08/12/2011 12:12

if there's children around, get a uv filter to protect the lens from jammy fingerprints. they are not too expensive.

DS 16 has the D3000 and it is an excellent starter slr camera!
these are some of his photographs taken with it
