Do I need a glue gun in my life?!

I make quite a lot of decorative things with felt, buttons, sequins, beads, ribbons, etc and if I need to use glue usually end up covered in it.

Would a glue gun be better or would I just end up with 3rd degree burns on my hands?! I've never used a GG so am not sure how runny the glue is - perhaps I just need slower glue....

Sorry for the long post for what is essentially a minor question but I don't want to end up with another piece of disappointing tat.

I used to have one and it was v useful, can't remember what happened to it though... I think if you had one you'd use it, it is pretty hot but then I always get my fingers stuck together with superglue (it's the only glue I seem to use) so maybe burns would be preferable??

sounds like you are long overdue one imo!

i'd love a staple gun. Just fancy the idea of recovering everything!

LaVolcan · 09/12/2011 18:20

Yes, do get one, but don't try to spread the glue out with your fingers.

I got one about a year ago but only recently started using it and I'm pretty hooked!

I used it to glue shells to the lid of box. Also when I took the decorations out of the loft, there were a few bits that had become detached etc and the glue gun sorted it all out pronto. Have also fixed DD's princess tiara.

It's been really good. You can buy the glue sticks for a good price on ebay.

I got mine from Dunelm Mill, it was on sale. Not sure if it's branded or not and I paid about £8.00 for it. I'm really surprised at how much I've used it.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 09/12/2011 21:00

Not really that hot but inclined to dribble glue when warmed up. Helps to assemble a number of projects, then turn on gg, not heat individually for each item.

The are great

LatteLady · 10/12/2011 17:38

OMG... yes, everyone needs one. You just don't know it yet!

AndiMac · 10/12/2011 17:46

Annie get your glue gun.

I just bought a cheap one a couple of weeks ago to try out a few things and quickly broke it in my enthusiasm! A reflection of the crappiness of the one I bought, not on glue guns in general - I think they are the bees knees now.

As for burns, yes, you have to be a bit careful as at least for mine it is burning hot for a short while when it comes out. So when you go to press something firmly in place the glue can squish out and burn your finger. You soon learn to not do it so firmly or use some sort of stick for pressing.

bigTillyMincepie · 10/12/2011 18:30

thanks! I might have to invest in one!

EssentialFattyAcid · 18/12/2011 19:48

Glue guns are very good but I am always getting burns from mine
Andimac's advice to use a stick instead of a finger is good advice!

I've used mine three times in the last week for random decorative and repair projects.

It worked a treat at repairing a puncture in an inflatable reindeer. .
