chunky wool - 100g enough for an adult scarf?

The wool i want to use is really expensive! Do you think i'd be able to get away with 100g ball of chunky alpaca wool on size 8 needles and have a decent length scarf?

thanks in advance oh wise knitters x

I doubt it. You don't get many metres of chunky yarn in a 100g ball, you definately wouldn't get a long scarf. Unless it was extremely narrow, and probably lacy too.

Maybe look for a cowl pattern instead? Which yarn is it?

Its black 100% 'bare back alpaca' yarn... its really lovely but £10 for 100g!

like this? Only 76 yards in a 100g ball.

You could search on ravelry for a pattern, they often include an approximate yardage. 2 balls would still only be around 150 yards - about the same as 1 x 50g ball of a standard DK wool.

Could you use that as an edging or just for either end and make the bulk of the scarf in another yarn?

You could do one of those short scarves with buttons at one end - like this... www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/button-up-neck-warmer

I don't think you've got enough for anything but a pretty short scarf (or a really narrow one....)

What about a hat? I have a similar chunky ball of yarn which cost a fortune and I found a pattern on Ravelry for it. It is 100 yds though so a bit longer. I wouldn't attempt any sort of scarf with it.

Having said that could you get a similar weight wool from a cheaper range (Debbie Bliss do a chunky for about £4 or £5 I think) and make some sort of pattern or feature of it.

No, you definitely will not get away with 100g... you will deffo need two balls.

thanks for all the replies... yes i think i'm going to choose a different wool, I have a scarf pattern i really want to try (first time doing a cable pattern) and i've done about 4 hats recently so i need a change! Will let you know how it turns out!
