Crafty Needle and Thread Virgin - Where to start updating baby clothes?

I'm expecting a baby girl in April and would like to update some of DS's baby clothes to look more individual and so she doesn't look like a girl dressed in boys' clothes.

Any ideas?

I am a complete novice (have done nothing crafty since I was a child) but would like to learn some basic stiches and thougt of maybe sewing some patches on thicker clothes but have really no idea how to start.

Would fabric glue work on baby clothes?

I've got some old clothing to practice on first.

No to fabric glue...I suggest you try basic applique and find some cute novelty print fabrics to try....or plain felt. <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.ericas.com/projects/proj9701.gif&imgrefurl=www.ericas.com/projects/proj9701.htm&usg=__9pH7fAUXDtU2BJ7xB2OS8Zf-93c=&h=236&w=252&sz=38&hl=en&start=2&sig2=I52P7_WJDTWESyrycoAtvQ&zoom=1&tbnid=hUWkmrRT9gJijM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=111&ei=iOHMTrqaJJK2hAeKrtTfDQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dapplique%2Bstitch%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26rlz%3D1W1ACAW_enGB356GB356%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">applique stitch instructions

To begin with get some cotton print scraps or felt and some iron on bonding fabric/fusable webbing....that's like white see through-ish stiff stuff that you iron onto your patch and then you can iron it onto your garment. You get it in any good haberdashery.

Try a basic square at first...rather than a complex shape...follow the instructions on the fusable webbing and then once it is on your patch..you iron it to the clothing. then using a stitch such as blanket stitch, you go all arond the patch to secure it to the garment. the webbing wont hold it on its own and you need to stitch it too.

You an also buy rick rack in nice colurs and that's easy to sew on...edge a plain top with rick rack...one or two strips in contrasting colours.

That's fantastic, thanks Mumbling. Off to the craft shop this afternoon.

bondaweb is amazing stuff, truly a time saver and great to boost your sewing skills.

Are you any good at crochet? As I've seen some tops where you cut away the collar and hem and edge in crochet, looks really pretty and perfect for making some boyish clothes more girly.

I can recommend [[http://www.sewandso.co.uk/Products/Opalescent-Glitter-Glue__HIT-GG29.aspx hitack] which is a glitter glue that washes well, great for adding a bit of sparkle to your applique patches.
