Black Sheep Wools often have bargains.

abc123d · 22/11/2011 14:08

Thank you SoupDragon for this website. Looks like they really got a nice selections of yarns. My local shop does not sell anything interesting. The one which is further down in the town sells yarn at fairly high price. I like Wendy mega chunky but that shop would sell it for more than £6.00.

hejhog?

I've used them and Cucumber Patch. Both are reliable. I often browse through the bargain bins on both. I think Black Sheep prices tend to be very competitive from my limited knowledge and experience.

I do like to support my little local shop occasionally too.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 23/11/2011 09:07

I have used Hejhog, Black Sheep, Cucumberpatch and Kemps Wool shop all for good bargains. Still working through the tons of Sublime cashmere merino silk I got from black sheep in the summer for £2.49 a ball. Lovely reduced cashsoft from cucumberpatch as well.

My new policy is rather than buying cheapish wool, get marked-down posh wool, much better Grin

abc123d · 23/11/2011 14:02

So what is a posh wool then?
Are there brands which I should avoid?

Generally acrylic yarns tend to be cheaper, some are quite nice, some are awful.

Anything which retails at over £5 a ball full price tends to be nice wool! Rowan wools are lovely, Debbie Bliss too (although I got some Debbie Bliss Andes which looks beautiful but I am finding it very difficult to knit with), and lots of smaller brands.

My current favourites are Sublime Cashmere Merino DK, Rowan Cashsoft DK, and Stylecraft Ethical Twist.

Nice acrylic yarns include Sirdar Snuggly and King Cole Big Value DK is surprisingly pleasant for the cost.

In the middle pricewise are acrylic and wool blends - eg 85% acrylic/15%wool or 30 % wool etc, things like Sirdar CountryStyle, Sirdar Click and millions of others.

Buying online is fab but there is no replacement for having a feel of them in a local wool shop. I head for the bargain bin first, most wool shops have them, marked down stuff because there is only a couple of balls left. Make sure you have enough for the project though Smile

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 23/11/2011 14:33

Avoid - I only avoid anything like a 6 pack of acrylic yarn for £2 because I am fairly sure it will be horrible scratchy rubbish.

I was in the town today and bought two different Patons Diploma Gold Dk, 50g for £2.35 each. They were in the bargain bin:)
Is it a good brand?

i bought some wool on ebay. It worked out at really good value.

CuppaTeaJanice · 23/11/2011 17:59

Have you looked in your local independent pound shops and discount stores? At least three of ours stock wool, often at less than £1 per ball. Also, bizarrely, Lloyds Chemist have quite a good range.

abc123d · 23/11/2011 18:27

I doubt our Lloyds Chemist sells yarn as it is a small corner chemist. I know Hobby Craft sells yarn but I have not seen there anything at a bargain price yet. The same about John Lewis.

Have not tried eBay for buying yarn.

alemci · 23/11/2011 18:34

sometimes people have job lots on there or they have bought too much or not used it for a project.

ouryve · 23/11/2011 22:15

I'm a big fan of Kemps for my yarn bargains. Have also had some good ones from The black Sheep and Stash (Celticcove)

ouryve · 23/11/2011 22:27

Patons make decent, workhorse yarn. I'm currently knitting a cardi in some Jet I bought for 79p a ball. I find it a bit itchy because of the alpaca content, but it's really gorgeous to knit with. Diploma Gold is a decent wool blend.

CuppaTeaJanice · 24/11/2011 10:42

If you are anywhere near Uppingham (south of Leicester) there used to be a yarn market that sold cones of wool at bargain prices. Haven't been there for years so I don't know if it's still there.

abc123d · 24/11/2011 10:57

Oh, thank you al of you for the lovely suggestions! I will check the recommended by online shops.
It would be nice to buy a pack of different colours like they used to sell in the summer called Lucy Pack. That was a pack of 22 or 24 and now it has been reduced to 15. Not a big bargain.

I use get knitted a fair bit, but I am local enough to be able to pop into store. The sale is usually reasonable and often a few bargains appear. I had a few odd noro balls that had been a bit roughly treated and were slightly unravelled.

I have also used [[http://www.purplelindacrafts.co.uk/ purple linda] as well, she tends to do some patons, stylecraft and rowan, so a mix of cheap and cheerful, good wool/acrylic mixes and some of the nicer stuff too. A few bargains had in there sale as well.

I have also used Black Sheep many a time, often see them at the craft shows and have had a few bargains. Sirdar Snuggly Crofter recently for £1.50 a ball, which is so shnuggly and soft and washable and self patterning.

kellestar · 24/11/2011 17:22

purple linda forgot that last ] thingy!

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 25/11/2011 13:48

Forgot to recommend McAdirect as well. here Not supercheap but does have some sale stuff - look under discontinued yarns, free delivery if you spend more than £10 and very quick - I ordered yesterday lunchtime and it is in front of me now Grin

I am a fan of Kemps too. Rather than looking for a yarn to suit my project, I look in their clearance section and knit according to whatever bargains I get from them!

abc123d · 26/11/2011 09:54

Thank you for the websites. I really appreciate all your nice suggestions. I will have to check them through.
