Where do you keep your wool?

Been crocheting now for, oh, at least 8 weeks and seem to have wasted loads of money on bought so many balls of wool that I have run out of space for them. How on earth do I keep them all tidy? At the moment they're in various carrier bags and all a bit muddled up ........

Mine are all shoved into a large drawer. Where they breed.

Seven large boxes from It's a gift. Under the bed. Sorted by colour and/or texture ie all my Jamieson & Smith wools are in one box. Which is very full.

Seven? [stash envy]

I have a little cabinet (one of the ones with baskets as drawers, if you see what I mean) - that's full of wool, then there's a big Cath Kidston tote bag full of my current projects, several bags of wool on the side in the front room, two more bagfuls and a basket full in the conservatory, three 400g balls in a bag on top of the fridge freezer in the den, and some balls of wool a friend gave me which are still on the kitchen table because I am a lazy mare and haven't found them a proper home yet.

And I have just noticed that there's a ball of wool on the desk, looking at me. They are taking over the house - but as I tell dh, they provide extra insulation (that's my excuse and I am sticking to it).

I've posted a pic of my storage on my profile. I LOVE IT! I took advice from someone on this arts and crafts threads and bought a dresser (£100 on ebay). So I've got my wool, felt, beading stuff, needles, buttons etc all in one place, it's fab .

When I'm working on a project I have the bits I need in a wicker basket (with handle) that I can carry from room to room depending on where I need it.

In a big wooden cabin trunk (unopened packages of 10 balls of wool) and odd balls in four storage boxes, organised according to type. Every so often I am obliged to have a purge and sell stuff on ebay! Mind you, I have wool dating back a couple of decades...

I have fond memories of my grandmother's blanket box which was stuffed full of wool.

Mine is mainly kept in 3 large bin liners in the loft. I went through it earlier this year and catalogued it all in a spreadsheet. I sold 2 packs on eBay that I was never going to use....and used up some more long term stash in various crochet projects. Then I fell off the wagon and bought a whole lot more 4ply cones for crocheting on eBay and have established a breeding colony of lopi wool.

I have now bought some huge plastic storage boxes for the loft which are stacked up empty on the landing. I think that is a job for the Christmas holidays! Grin

PMSL @ spreadsheet :o

I bought this but my wool is slowly breeding even more, much like Gremlins.

I have some old suitcases in the spare room, a couple of laundry hampers too, wicker baskets in the lounge for the current projects. Yarn is stored by colour. But I also use Ravelry to keep a track of where I stash things. Ultra organised with yarn but nothing else in my life is.

I am terrible for just buying more yarn just because it's pretty. I have so much that I could knit/crochet a jumper for every member of my family without buying more yarn.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 21/11/2011 21:32

I have a proper knitting bag plus two carrier bags of WIPs in the living room and two large vacuum pack doodahs from john lewis under the bed Blush -only started knitting a year ago

LidlVoice · 21/11/2011 23:34

So it's not just me then Grin. Think I may get a big wicker basket for the day to day stuff and about ten a couple of plastic boxes for the rest. Thanks for sharing everyone Smile

Earlier on this year, I was browsing through the wool in a charity shop, and got chatting to an american lady who was doing the same. She told me that she's part of a knitting group back home, and they have a pact with eachother that, in the event of the death of a member, the rest will go to their home and recover all the yarn, before their husbands/partners learn the awful truth about how much yarn they had accumulated.

I have two canvas tote bags - one from John Lewis with all my wool and needles in and one from Cath Kidson with my current project(s). Both sit beside the sofa so I can drool over the wool or simply knit whenever the urge takes me. Both bags are beautiful so I like having them on display. When my wool stash grows (and I'm also about to start taking up sewing!) then I will invest in nice big wicker baskets eg from Heal's (only the best for my hobbies Grin)
