Small, basic, reasonably priced sewing machine for 12 yo DD -any suggestions?

This may be a short-lived phase so I don't want to go OTT but DD has asked for a sewing machine.

Can anyone recommend a small, lightweight, easy to use one that is not too expensive please. Doesn't need to be all-singing, all-dancing as it will be for small projects.

Thanks.

I don't know if this is any good but I saw in in store yesterday. Also, if you sign up for an email/newsletter, they have a voucher for £5 off. Hope this helps.

Or John Lewis do a small machine for about £60 which has a couple of good reviews. Here

I think Argos do a fairly cheap one.Smile

maclover -thanks for that. That certainly looks like the sort of thing I was thinking of, right price etc.

I can't find the reviews though or am I being dense?

Last post was about the Hobbycraft one.

Thanks Crazynanna -the 2 cheapest ones at Argos look a bit basic and flimsy but the Beldray one looks OK though

I don't think there are any reviews of the Hobby Craft one - although you could google and see what comes up. It's the JL one which has good reviews.

I had a look at the John Lewis £60 one in store last week, was considering one for DD. I think it's great value, a proper little sewing machine (not a toy one) at a good price.

CroissantNeuf · 20/11/2011 22:18

Thank you AW, I'll keep that one in mind.

I did have a bid on a nice little Singer on ebay earlier but was outbid.

John Lewis are made by janome which are good solid make. I have one of basic full size which is very good.

amazonianwoman · 20/11/2011 23:03

Didn't know that bruffin Smile

Definitely that one then! I have a Janome ((cost almost £300) and it's fab, I love it.

Just to update - I bought this Hyundai 8 stitch machine today for £24.99 (originally £50) at .......Poundstretcher.

After talking to a friend I realised that it was a bit daft to spend any more on one really as DD will only be making little light weight things and, TBH, may well go off the whole idea a few months later.

Wow that's a bargain Grin

Bought the John Lewis one yesterday but think I'll return it and get that one...

Is it for your DD too?

My Mum is now going to get together a basket of sewing bits and bobs for my DD for Xmas so if you see any nice sewing baskets for a 12yo do let me know!

Yes for DD, won't let her use my Janome!

Am going to cut out some squares and buy some cheap inner cushions, will look out for sewing boxes!

bruffin · 26/11/2011 20:47

THere is some cotton a4 size sheets that you can print onto using a normal printer. It's called miracle fabric which might appeal to your dd.
