What to edge a fleece blanket with?

Any ideas?

Starting point is that DD has (finally) admitted she's a bit big for all the pram blankets that were knitted nearly 5 years ago when she arrived so we went and bought a pretty piece of fleece that she can use as a blanket to snuggle under on the sofa or in the car. I know that it doesn't really need anything, but it would be nice to finish it off a bit more than just trimmed edges.

DD likes the idea of something satiny. Could I use satin ribbon or would that be a huge faff? I'm not sure satin bias would be deep enough to look effective. Some kind of decorative stitch would be the other option - not sure my machine really does "pretty" though, and not sure I've got the enthusiasm to go round it by hand (although wondering if that would be the best option).

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas...

well, yes, blanket stitch would be traditional! It's quite a nice quick stitch too - you could use a silvery (or whatever goes with the blanket) thread?

I would not have bothered and haven't :) loads of fleeces and not sewed a one, but I have Ds so maybe not so fussy ?

fleece is stretchy so sewing a rigid ribbon around might reduce you to swear words! Easier would be to cut a fringed edge into it- you could leave it like that or plait the strands

I've usually bagged it out with another length of fleece, turned it through & then flat stitched it in inch or so in from the edge, to give a frame - this also gives you a really plush, reversible fleece blanket Wink

if you wanted a silky type edging to it then you could mebbe do it with shiny lycra?

How old is she? Could be a nice project for a 4-5 yo to blanket stitch round and maybe add some other bits of easy embroidery if she gets into itGrin also good hand eye coordination/ fine motor skills practiceWink

Lots of ideas - thanks :)

Re. the ribbon idea, I was thinking it might be a way to get something wider and fold it over, which I hoped would avoid the stretchy/rigid issue (unless it was going to act like toothpaste Confused!), but not convinced it would be effective.

She's nearly 5 and can do running stitch on coarse AIDA, especially if she's given some lines to follow. Suspect her patience would run out with the amount of blanket stitch required to go around the blanket, though :o.

I think for the moment I'm going to put that on hold and focus on the things that need doing/finishing either as Christmas presents or just because if they're not done before Christmas I should have another baby to juggle in the mix as well!

Any more suggestions would be good and I'll tuck them away for when we've the time to do it (which might be a couple of years, by which time DD may well be up for the challenge :o)
