Painting ceramic mugs

I'd like to give a few relatives mugs with DD's foot and handprints on them. You can buy DIY kits to do this but I thought if I'm doing it I may as well do a few for my large extended family and I'd like to save a few quid.

Instead of getting loads of these DIY kits, can I buy any old ceramic mug and some paints separately and bake them myself? What kind of paint should I use?

Appreciate any help.

I think you can use any plain white ceramic mug. I've bought them from Ikea when using them with the brownies and guides. The paints we used were pebeo ceramic paints, you bake them in the oven to set them. We also bought the ceramic paint pens for the writing as handwriting with a paintbrush is hard to do.

Footprints are hard to get on mugs, handprints are a little easier. Keep some kitchen roll and water handy to wipe it off and start again if needed. I also found that the first print you do isn't the greatest as it's loaded with paint, second print seems to be better.

When you do a foot print get one person to hold the baby and the other to almost roll the mug under baby's foot. IYSWIM?
