How to sew a cylinder?

Not even sure I've spelled that right? Blush

I've made a rectangular door stop and made it with one long strip for four of the rectangule's faces, then made a top and a base. It looks great but getting the corners right was a tad tricky, so wondered whether I could make a 'tube' shaped one instead? Anyone got any experience with this? How would I go about sewing the edges of the tube onto the top and base? Would I have to cut little V shapes into the seams?

yes, no reason why not. Make the tube and then put on the ends. Pin it really well with the pins going across the line of the seam and when you've sewn it clip the seams like you say. If it was me I would probably get all mathematical for working out the circumference of the circle but you could equally just measure it.

Thanks elderberry - my length of tube end is 40cm, which I calculate to be approx 13.3cm diameter Confused

Circum=2 x pi x radius

So i make your diameter to be approx 12.7 cm.... I think!

Hmm. May try for 13 as a happy medium - tbh as long as I have enough material it should be good to go (and I don't think I'm good enough for 3mm difference to actually be noticeable! Blush) :o

Do you think handles will work okay? As long as it's not too wide? (I've put a pic up on my profile of my box-shaped one)

don't forget your seam allowance though!

Flubba · 14/11/2011 17:21

Yes, good point, but my seam allowance can be the 2.5cm if I've got it right (once I sew up to the closing point) or 2.2/2.8cm if I'm 3mm out! :o
