Fun craft project for a 9 y/o that can be done with one hand???

DD has just broken her arm - high up so no cast but in an immobilising thingy, and has to be super careful not to move it etc. for the moment. Understandably she's very fed up (will miss swimming gala, no playing out etc etc).

I was thinking that maybe a good distraction might be some kind of nice craft project that we could do together, maybe go to the shops tomorrow & get some bits and pieces. So, oh wise crafty types, any good suggestions for things she/ we could do that only need one hand??? Even better if they are crafty projects that might make nice Christmas presents Grin

Hama beads?

Are those the things that you iron on to a pattern? Come to think of it we have some in the cupboard (we didn't have an iron when dd was given them Blush ) Will fish them out (and google Hama beads in case they aren't them!)

That's what they are!

I'm also thinking it might be a good weekend to make Christmas pudding, start making some christmas cards etc.

You could make Christmas cards by doing sticking if you used a squeezy bottle of PVA glue with glitter or bits of magazines/old christmas cards...

Agree with above on Christmas cards -

though I'd suggest using bought stencils, or perhaps you could cut some out for her - you can buy books of them in most craft/art shops, paint through into the shapes with PVA & then using an ice cream tub or similar to hold the glitter, dip them into the glitter - easy with one hand - less mess & no wasted glitter :)

She could also try doing either cards, or just art work using shapes & something like this spray diffuser - you can make one out of a straw - bend & nip part way through at the bend - water down the paints to an easy flow liquid - build up pictures patters etc by laying wipable objects onto paper & blow painting over them - you can build up shapes & colours a layer at a time -

if you get her making cards, she can get a little production line going doing a colour layer at a time - we always get DD making her own Xmas cards for her class mates & friends etc & theres lots of ways you can simplify this for doing with one hand - which will keep her busy, but with a purpose - I know my 9 yr old likes to know shes doing things for a reason ATM

P>S> as shes 1 handed - give her some big paper clips or weights to hold stencils etc in place

If you make gingerbread biscuit dough with her and roll it out for her, she can make Christmas tree decorations with cookie cutters; you can similarly make salt dough for her to make longer lasting ones.

On the same cooking theme, if she can help mix things or at any rate then cut out, pepper mint creams or lemon creams usually go down well as little presents. V easy.

And get her a few craft boxes with some glue and buttons and beads to stick on and glitter to sprinkle - don't try to cover with fabric or paper, but you to varnish afterwards. They could even hold the sweets! You can also do the same with card surrounds to be used for favourite photos.

Decopatch/decoupage would be fun even with just one hand? You can buy nice blanks in Hobbycraft etc nowadays :)
