Cutting perfect circles

DharmaBumpkin · 04/11/2011 20:06

I have been trying to reuse old Xmas cards by making globes thus: pretty globes

However, I have tried various ways of cutting the circles (marking and then cutting by hand, using a rotary scalpel thingy) and not been able to get consistent perfect circles! As I am a total Christmas fanatic someone who likes things to look just so, this is driving me nuts!

I have looked on line for solutions and most people seem to use die cutting machines. Which are a tad expensive, but doable if they really are the bees knees for things like this.

So: help! Do I need to shell out the money, or is there an obvious way of making perfect circles that I am too thick to figure out not seeing at the moment???

punches :)

hobbycrafts will sell them, or you can buy online, something like these :)

Thanks bumpybecky but I should have said, I want to be able to cut a range of circle sizes... Not unlimited, but maybe three different globe sizes. It seemed to me that by the time I got three different punches I might as well get a die cutting machine.

So really, what I want is something lowtech that will be flexible enough to allow me to cut different sized circles easily...

I'm not an expert at all, I've not got a posh die cutter, only a sidekick (too small for what you want). What is your goal here? Do you want to justify buying the machine or do you want the most cost effective solution? Grin

If you buy something really fancy like a craft robo you can cut any font in any size, there will be a basic shapes font so you can cut any size. However I'm not sure how well that's going to cut cards, especially given they're bits of cards IYSWIM

There are other die cutters with rollers like big shot etc, but you're going to need to buy dies as well as the machine. That's going to be £££ (but not as much as a electronic cutter)

3 different sizes of punch is going to be a lot cheaper than any cutting machine, smaller to store too.

Grin at justifying the purchase

I want cost effective flexibility... I suspect that won't happen, and to be honest the flexibility is a bit more important than the cost effectiveness, so I potentially will be going down the machine route - possibly a Big Shot???? My basic problem is I don't really know how much I'll use it, but at the very least I plan to do this with the last 4-5 years worth of cards, and on into the future... I suspect if I do go down the machine route I will manage to find a myriad of other things to faff around with as well!
