Knitting - what's the best way to get started?

I've recently become a stay-at-home mother and would love to start knitting, but don't know how to begin. I used to knit as a child so I could probably remember the basic stitches (plain and purl, I think?) but can't remember anything more complicated than that!

Is there a good book I could buy? Or is it best to start with a very basic pattern?

I knit scarves, get some nice fluffy wool like whisper/plume and cast on about 25 stitches and knit 2 balls till your've finished..

This is so easy, and it looks really good!

The Stitch and Bitch book (Stitch and Bitch) is good. Nice patterns, good introduction.

I too used to knit as a child, but only recently picked it up again. I've been knitting again for a year, and have found it a really nice crafty activity.

i posted a similar query on a thread called knitting chat or something similar and NQC and others posted some really helpful links there. i'm in exactly the same boat as you, and the info is great.

here is a link to the knitting chat thread. I think I'm the only one posting on it at the moment, though.
