Hat knitting help.

My question will demonstrate how clueless I am (the last thing I knitted was a scarf which I then lost): what sort of needles do I need for this hat pattern? It gives the size, but would that refer to circular needles?

I know that I should probably start again with something easy like a scarf, but this looked more fun.

Sorry not sure about knitting

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 10:22

That pattern looks like a lot of fun.
I would do it on a straight needle. The pattern doesn't make it clear (I think, not looked very carefully) that, after you have threaded your needle through the last few stitches, you then need to sew up the seam to actually make it into a hat. Looking at the pattern, I think that you may well have a few difficulties before you are at the top of the hat, but don't worry, they will be easily ironed out.

angelpantser · 02/11/2011 10:22

I think that the instructions are for using straight needles in 4mm as it doesn't say to join in the round so at the end you will need to sew up a seam.

Thanks! There is a child's version of the pattern too if anyone is interested. I shall check what size my existing needles are and get going.

Hey

This is definitely knitted flat and then sewn together as you alternate knit rows and purl rows i.e. forwards and backwards. If you want to save yourself the sewing job you could knit on circular needles - if you did this you would replace all the purls with knits on the purl rows.

It's also not that straight forward a hat because where you start joining in the white you need to be able to do colourwork/fairisle on purl rows - if you converted it to knitting in the round it would be easiere as you'd be doing your fairisle only on knit stiches - just a thought.

If you wanted me to convert it to knitting in the round I'd happily do that for you. I'd suggest a 16inch circular needle for a hat as you don't want it to be stretched...

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 13:09

Oh goodness yes, I hadn't seen that. Even with a 16" circular she would still have to do magic loop or double pointeds, wouldn't she?

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 13:12

DutchOma that's true - you'd need to do magic loop once you were closing down the top of the hat if you were doing it on circulars...

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 13:16

It's a very nice hat though

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 13:20

Wouldn't suit me - I look enough like a pudding without putting holly on the top :)

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 13:21

Oh dear... Smile

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 14:21

It's a good thing really - i'm pregnant!

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 14:28

Congratulations. What are you knitting for the new arrival?

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 14:34

Thank you :)

I've had this in my queue on Ravelry for a long time now (three losses in the last two years) once I'm feeling confident I'll cast on...

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 14:37

I've done that one a few times, it is as gorgeous as it looks and not that difficult.
How far gone are you?

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 14:42

10 weeks at the moment - so still early days. Having another reassurance scan tomorrow and then elective CVS next Tuesday - we chose to terminate our last pregnancy for Downs...

DutchOma · 02/11/2011 15:30

Not quite at the 'pudding' stage then. You could still wear the hat. Smile
Every good wish and prayers coming your way.

KnitterNotTwitter · 02/11/2011 16:04

:) and thanks

CardiCorgi · 02/11/2011 18:16

Thanks for the tips and congratulations on your pregnancy. That blanket looks lovely.
I would wear the pudding hat anyway, but I have no shame.

I think I will try knitting it flat as I already have suitable needles (and I have no idea what a magic loop is), however if I were to do it in the round, how would it be changed? I assume that every other row would have the order reversed and also the type of stitch, so k1 p2 k3 would become p3 k2 p1, is there anything else that would need to be changed?

No, if you look at the pattern where you join the white, you will have to do so many sts in white and so many in brown (it tells you how many). Then when you have done one row in knit, you do another one purl, so many white, so many brown (again it tells you how many).
If you do it in the round you don't do any purl stitches, just so many white and so many brown. You would need to mark the beginning of the round.
If you want to do it, just start off with casting on your 94 sts and your ribbing and your 20 rows stocking stitch all in brown and then come again on this thread (or send me a private message) to cope with the next bit. It's not THAT difficult, but you may need an experienced knitter to help you a bit.
