Ballroom skirt? Mathematicians and seamstresses needed

I have made a ballroom dress for DD

It's 2 squares at 90 degrees making a handkerchief hem with a patterned top layer and a green bottom layer (an eight point star - Pa,G,Pa,G,Pa,G,Pa,G)

Her teacher says the split between the 2 skirts is too short; I have a few options....

  1. take the skirt apart, turn the angles to 60 degrees (maybe) & add a third purple layer making a 12 point star (Pa,G,P,Pa,G,P,Pa,G,P,Pa,G,P)
  2. add 2 layers of purple underskirt making a 16 point start (Pa,P,G,P,Pa,P,G,P,Pa,P,G,P,Pa,P,G,P)
  3. remove the green underskirt & have just the purple one - 12 points again (pa,p,p,pa,p,p,pa,p,p,pa,p,p)
  4. have a nervous breakdown

I'm leaning towards 4, but suggestions appreciated

How difficult is it going to be to take the skirt apart and add another layer? That would probably be the neatest option, but would probably have me raving...

I think the easiest option would probably be to make a 2 layer underskirt and attach it so that she wears it at an opposing angle... Either that of a very full single circular underskirt at about 3/4 the length of the existing skirts (so it will be barely glimpsed beneath the current ensemble, but with preserve modesty when your daughter is twirling across the ballroom....)

Oakmaiden I hadn't thought of that

I'm not sure I have enough material for a full circle skirt - these handkerchief skirts are so easy

Taking it apart would be fine - I cheated & sewed the two layers together with a long straight stitch, then zigzagged onto a 2 inch elastic & folded it over

"Her teacher says the split between the 2 skirts is too short" Hmm.

I agree w Oakmaiden about the underskirt. You might be able to get away with less than a full circle, you could make a flared skirt (like a slip) a bit shorter than the current "too short" level, then attach something fuller to the bottom, like a frill. But itself with a pointy hem so it looks of a piece with the handkerchief overskirts. I don't know if this makes sense, but if you cut a "mini" handkerchief skirt with a fairly big circle in the middle - say 60cm square with a 30cm diameter hole in the middle. Cut 2 (or more though I think 2 will do it) of these, and each one cut from the middle of one side upwards to the hole in the centre. That gives you a strip of fabric with an up and down hem on one side (the outside of the squares) and a straight edge on the other (the "unrolled" circle) about 90cm long. Join together into one long circle, and attach to the bottom of your slip (gathering as necessary) so that the join is hidden by the overskirt.

I do wonder if I am procrastinating because I don't want to do it Blush

I have decided to go with option 3

It's all apart now - just to put it together
