Fancy knitting a blanket (or even a bit of one!) to give to women and children escaping domestic violence?

Refuge (the domestic violence charity) recently launched their Comfort Blanket Campaign. The idea is to bring a bit of comfort and warmth to the women and children staying in their network of refuges across the UK, lots of whom arrive with only the clothes that they're standing up in.

They wonder if any crafty MNers could help them out by knitting one or more 6" squares, which can be sewn together to create larger blankets for the families who access Refuge's services.

It doesn't matter if you're an absolute beginner, an old hand, or even a whole knitting group - all contributions will be very welcome. Feel free to make up your own design, or use one of the 26 fab patterns that Refuge's campaign partners Simply Knitting and The Knitter magazines have designed. You can grab them here in return for a small donation to Refuge.

If you're a ferociously fast knitter (or you get together with other MNers) and can rustle up a whole blanket, send it directly to Refuge's offices at 4th Floor, International House, 1 St Katharine's Way, London E1W 1UN.

But if you're just starting out or pressed for time, don't worry - the (very) lovely people at Simply Knitting have kindly agreed to stitch your individual squares into whole blankets, if you send them in to their own offices at Simply Knitting, Units 1 & 2 Cotterell Court, Monmouth Place, Bath BA1 2NP.

Happy knitting! If you decide to help out, do post here to let us know how you get on.

Done 2 and a half squares today. Nearly went to a refuge - and really wish I had now! Will continue tomorrow!!

The above sounds wrong. I think they are great places for people in need. The last 7 yrs would have been easier if I had hidden somewhere with kids at the start of my marital troubles. Very happy to knit for them.

I'd like to join in and have a quick question. I've only ever knitted with chunky yarns so, stupid as this question is, do I need to use two strings of yarn at the same time for DK?

purplewerepidj · 08/10/2011 10:17

confusedpixie, you should only need one strand at a time, but you'll need 4mm needles. It won't grow as fast as you're used to, though Wink

confusedpixie · 08/10/2011 13:32

purple: thanks, I've never understood dk. Been knitting for years but always using Big Softie or Demin Ultra. I can imagine I'll get very frustrated with how slowly it grows :o I'll be giving it a go now though, I have a load of yarn of the right size to use up!

purplewerepidj · 08/10/2011 13:44

It's just how they weigh the wool, I think. DK is the most common because it's not too thick for baby stuff, and not so thin it takes three years to knit a jumper!

It's not that slow, but will feel that way as it's less bulky. You'll probably find you like it - there's a much bigger range of wools in DK weight Grin

confusedpixie · 08/10/2011 18:34

I've seen a few bamboo based wools in dk weight, I'd love to try those :o

There is too much variety in dk Wink

duchesse · 09/10/2011 15:38

Thanks for this info Kate- I will look through my wool mountain stash for DK.

Hello

I'm a little late to this but would love to knit a blanket (or as many squares as I can!). I donated via the justgiving page but the link to the square patterns doesn't work. Is this because the official deadline has passed? Does anyone know how I can get the square patterns? Would love to look at the patterns, as it would be great to do something a bit nicer than just plain squares!

KnottyLocks · 14/10/2011 09:29

Flip, there are some patterns for 6" squares on this site

prettywhiteguitar · 14/10/2011 14:16

ooh exciting I will definitely get the knitting needles out for this, especially as someone else will sew it together, thats the worst part

FlipFantasia · 15/10/2011 08:12

Knotty thanks - some great patterns there!

DeliriousTante · 21/10/2011 19:22

Lovely idea. Will put a few squares together.

Alambil · 26/10/2011 01:56

what a fabulous idea! I wish I could knit ... I'm going to start an advice thread!

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 26/10/2011 02:21

i will mention to my boss as she runs a community hub with a weekly knitting group but has no campaign to knit for yet... she is also a facilitator for the freedom programme (how we met Wink ) so this is a cause close to our hearts

bamboobutton · 28/10/2011 18:39

i have just found a blanket i crocheted(sp??) yeeears ago which i have never used so i will be sending that off.

it will be nice to think of it being used and loved rather than stuffed into a cupboard and forgotten about.

PerAr6ua · 28/10/2011 20:12

ooh, bookmarking. Don't have the concentration for patterns right now, but 6" squares of plain I can do aplenty Grin

WallowedInFlies · 28/10/2011 21:43

i will do plain or stripey but not ready for patterns yet i don't think. i'm a beginner.

RowanMumsnet · 29/10/2011 10:29

Aw, thanks you lot for keeping this going.

Does anyone know if it is it still Ok to send squares to Simply Knitting and them attach? Only I don't think I could make enough, and don't know anyone else locally who I could get together with and make a blanket. And is the deadline definitely Christmas?

ShakeThyGoryKnottyLocks · 29/10/2011 16:00

You only need 30 squares for a childrens' blanket, Pistey Grin

They must be still accepting single squares though. Mustn't they?

Better get HQ to confirm.

ShakeThyGoryKnottyLocks · 29/10/2011 16:05

Have just PMed asking for confirmation.

RowanMumsnet · 29/10/2011 16:07

Hello hello

I have not a scooby I'm afraid, but I will get on to Refuge to ask and post here when they get back to me. Thanks to Knotty for the heads-up.

Hello Grin

That'll be most helpful, Rowan. Thank you.

Btw, can you knit or crochet? Smile
