Phildar Knitting Wool

Do any of you knit with Phildar wool? My mother and I used to knit with it years ago and it was brilliant, it could be washed and tumble dried and never looked like it had been made a decade before. I've more or less stopped knitting because I became so disheartened seeing all my good work end up looking shabby.

Since Phildar pulled out of the UK market (showing my age) I've never found anything to rival it. I now notice that Phildar have an online shop and I am considering making a purchase. The yarns have all changed and I wonder if they are still as good. Does anyone know or does anyone have an equivalent 'super' yarn??

I used to use a lot of Phildar and my DD had a beautiful knitted "smocked" Phildar dress and my mother stitched a Peter pan colour to it. This is 24 ears ago!

I find that Debbie Bliss cashmerino is lovely, but have been knitting square for the MN blanket and have to say that the Rowan Cashsoft knits up very quickly and feels and looks gorgeous. Some fabulous colours too

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think I am going back about 24 years if not more. How do the yarns you mention wash and dry?

Hi, gosh, they typos in my previous message! I meant Pert Pan collar and 24 years!

They wash and wear in a similar way, they have a lovely cotton feel to them, which would have been much better for DD as less itch factor on the eczema affected arms.

I like it very much, it makes me want to knit!

I order from the phildar site, they have by far the best wool in terms of range and colours - also you can buy all the buttons etc that go with the design. They now do some patterns in english, unless you're feeling brave to get your head around french knitting patterns - they are divine and I only wish we had patterns like that in the UK. Their sales are pretty good too.

Thud! My brain is not in gear for typing!

Typing and knitting are quite different sports! I'm very tempted to buy some wool but now I really don't know what to buy! the Debbie Bliss and Rowan look nice but I'm tempted to try the new range of Phildar to see if they wash as well.

Monkeypuzzletree, which Phildar yarns have you used?

Hi there,
I too used to knit with phildar and I really miss it. I'm not a great knitter and only made the really simple clothes for my children when they were small (phildar always made even the most simple patterns look good!) Now I have grandchildren I would like to knit again but the baby & toy patterns aren't in English and I can't even find out how to order wool from the website! don't quite know where to start!
can anyone talk me through the process of odering something from them? Thanks
PS has anyone tried translating the French patterns? not sure whether to have a go as only have basic French from a long time ago!

hi here is the website. phildar. They appear to be revamping the english site. If you have even basic french and some basic knitting knowledge, it is worth looking at the patterns as they have great schematics. here are some hints: here
