My Dream Shop!

RedRubyBlue · 08/09/2011 21:11

I want a little shop with a bow window and bullseye panes. The door would be smaller than average and have a little brass bell attached. Inside you would find a highly polished wooden floor and white shelves filled with vintage textiles and patchwork quilts, old sweet jars filled with buttons and reels and reels of ribbons in all colours and finishes.

It would smell of lavender and bergamot and would have a wood burning stove.
My shop would be a wonderland of colours and textures, rather like working in a rainbow and you would find buttons in the shape of ladybirds and blackberries and cunning little bouquets of silk roses and applique daisies.

Ribbons would be in gingham and velvet and silk and the patchwork quilts would be in reds and creams and cream silk squared with black velvet. White cotton pillow slips would be edged with broderie anglaise and ironed with starch and lavender water.

I would have stained glass lanterns that I would light in the winter and at Christmas the shop would smell of cinnamen and cloves and the decorating theme would be tartan and Scottie dogs.

I would have a black cat that would sleep in the window when it was sunny and by the stove in a rocking chair in the winter.

Would you come and buy from me?

Is it wrong that I am actually salivating?! Grin
Any buttons that look like Tolstoy?

RedRubyBlue · 11/09/2011 22:04

Tolstoy is the cat that walks alone over the chimney tops.

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 11/09/2011 22:23

Ooh pretty. And do you make your own too? [need a glitter smiley!]

RedRubyBlue · 11/09/2011 22:35

This is the shop of your dreams my dear. I sell whatever your dreams desire.

Just name it and I shall present it.

In a haberdashery field that is. I don't do all the fancy pants kind of fashion stuff like that Shona Macartree.

[hoiks boobs and does a cats bum mouth]

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 11/09/2011 22:42

Yippee! I loves haberdashery.
(Wonders if am actually too fond of pink and glitter for mumsnet?)

RedRubyBlue · 11/09/2011 23:00

Then my dear you have arrived at the right place.

Fill yer boots while I fill yer teacup.

"Tolstoy!

Get on the ladies lap while I bring out the pink and glittery stuff that Danny La Rue left behind"

I must tell you that we don't do fur or leather or feathers here.

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 11/09/2011 23:03

Ooh Tolstoy, pink suits you Grin
Not a fur etc fan here either, although fake fur is rather soft (but can never find a use for it)
So what is your favourite thing in your shop then Ruby?

RedRubyBlue · 12/09/2011 09:10

My favourite thing? That would be The Cloak of Many Colours owned by some guy called Joseph. It is just lovely and such fine stitching. I wear it when the weather turns parky.

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 12/09/2011 18:13

Sounds like just the thing for the weather out there at the moment. Popping back in as a more fun diversion than the work I must do, and also to peruse your beads - I need some more for my cross stich.

I would open the door and the bell would tinkle, the shop assistant would immediately notice I needed some looking after and offer me a cuppa. Then with the cat on my lap we would discuss my new cushions, patterns and crochet.
I would never feel rushed to leave and she would pop a toffee in the bag.
I would feel much better.

< I realise this defeats the point but you have painted such a lovely picture>

RedRubyBlue · 12/09/2011 22:04

Prolific

Tea and ...........................

[looks prolific up and down with a twinkly smile]

and a slice of rarebit and a treacle tart.

Poncey

I have some beautiful Tibetan prayer bells and some from a grotto in Lapland.

Sit down with prolific and I shall fetch them.

Tolstoy? Come down you bad, bad cat. There are two empty laps here!

prolificwillybreeder · 12/09/2011 22:17

How did you know? How did you know? < thinks and nods, of course she knows, how could she not know?
Ah, such a comfy chair with well loved cushion.

RedRubyBlue · 12/09/2011 23:29

Ahh it is lovely to take the weight off my feet and sit in front of the fire.

Now it is quiet I can sit and think about 'my story'.

It started with a boy that I had my eye on when we were children. We played and then the play grew to a young love. He promised me a little house and a bairn or two.

We found my house and I went through the rooms with love in my heart and hopes in my dream.

The sitting room would be blue with primrose print curtains. I sewed the curtains and my man promised me the room would be beautiful because he would paint it.

It was beautiful as he promised it would be.

During the day I sat and sewed the curtains and then I sewed again watching my belly grow. He painted the nursery and he promised it would be as I wanted it. Yellow roses grew around the door. The roses he grew just for me.

I sat and waited for his whistle that was just for me and I cooked and he ate and his smile was just for me

Our home was beautiful because he promised it would be.

I laid the bairn in his cradle that he made for him. It was so beautiful. He said it would be.

He promised he would be there for the bairn and the new bump in my belly.

He wore khaki and promised he would return.

It would not be...........

I have my shop and I sew my blankets and wind my ribbons..............because I am here.

oh dear, thats a sad tale red. am i allowed in please? i dont do fabric stuff really, but am looking for some pretty ribbons for tying together stretchy bracelets, and just general prettiness to adorn my house with. oh, and could i have coffee please, milk no sugar as i only drink tea if i'm ill (and am thankfully not right now) and something yummy to nibble on please? tolstoy is welcome on my lap, but he might have to share with my 5 month old kitten (and my dalmation who thinks she is a lap dog)

RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 00:09

Cherry

I was getting all maudlin and the tinkiling bell brought me round. Smile

Ahh a wee dog and a kitten................your life is fine and dandy.

Coffee and .................[let me look at yer wee face] and an Abbey biscuit?

Have a look at my lavender wreaths and lavender gingham ribbons.

You need some serenity after the trauma and heart rending you have gone through. There is a light on the horizon.

You will be full of light my love. Take a few yards of purple Harris tweed with my blessings.

And a few lengths of turquoise ribbon. Wear it in your hair.

'Tolstoy, leave the customer alone and eat yer fish'

Night, night. cherry. God Bless.

OP posts:
CherryMonster · 13/09/2011 13:24

good morning, thanks for the ribbon, its perfect, the turquoise wont go in my hair i'm afraid as my hair doesnt tolerate ribbon (too thick) but it will go nicely with a set of bracelets that i have in mind. oh, and i have a treat for tolstoy

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 13/09/2011 13:43

Afternoon! Am in to spend my lottery winnings (very excited at e-mailing saying I had won, less excited when saw the 2 figure amount!). Do you have anything to do with butterflies Ruby? Currently watching a rather beautiful one out of the window.

Cheese Tolstoy? My own cat is a huge fan and was trying to eat my sandwich earlier.

RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 13:50

Tolstoy!!! That lady is back and has something for yooooooooooooo! Maybe it is some nice ham.

Other nice lady has some cheese for yooooooooooooooooo!

Butterflies? I have applique butterflies with lapuz lazuli and amythest enamalling. Very pretty?

How many would you like?

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 13/09/2011 13:57

Your butterflies sound lovely. The original butterfly flew away as it is now raining and cold outside, with a howling wind
Can I have 3 please? I feel 2 should be attached onto my shoes! Detailing came off so am re-doing them with my own stuff.
How are your kittens Tolstoy? How many do you have?

CherryMonster · 13/09/2011 14:19

just wondering ruby, do you possibly have a little space in which to display some pretty handmade jewellery? i have made some pretties just for this purpose, gemstone chip bracelets in pretty shades of pink, blue, lavender and mint green, and used some of your gorgeous lavender ribbon to tie them together. treat for tolstoy is a small bit of chicken left over from my lunch, i have taken the fatty bits of so he doesnt turn into a porker x

RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 14:59

Cherry

Of course you can my love. I shall clear a space in the window as we type speak.

Would you like some black velvet to display it on?
