Crochet Granny Square Blankets

So after several attempts I have now learnt to crochet and will make a granny square blanket shortly!

Is there any way of working out how much wool you need? My friend that has helped me just bought 10 x 100g balls of wool and is doing a huge granny square.

I thought that would be plenty of wool and went and got 10 balls myself (5 balls for £6 from a local charity shop!) in colours that go together (daughter chose them as it is her blanket)

I think my head is going to explode soon with all the knitting I have planned and now crochet! Still very much a beginner at the moment, need to learn how to increase and decrease!

I've no idea how much wool you'll need but I'm doing the same! :)
Think I'll get bored with granny squares tho before I have enough so plan to put them as a border on a fleece blanket for dd in the buggy.
I've made nearly 16 and think I'll need 60+ for a buggy blanket!

I'm loving it tho! Grin

My fiend told me the idea of granny squares is to use up oddments of wool rather than do a planned one so there may not be a way to work out how much wool is needed.

When she bought all hers I thought 'well, the long, long sleeved cardigan I am currently knitting is taking up about 600g of wool so 1000 should be plenty!'

I may get a bit bored but now I have started working on more than one project at the same time so I just jump between them all! Will now be doing one big knitting project, a smaller knitting project and then the granny squares!

Erm... wouldn't the amount of yarn you need totally depend on the size of the blanket you want to end up with?

PurpleFrog · 02/08/2011 15:36

Do you have digital kitchen scales accurate to nearest 2g ? If so, and you are making a blanket made out of lots of granny squares, weigh a couple of squares and you should be able to work out how much yarn you will need for your blanket.

Cattleprod · 02/08/2011 15:40

Oh crap, you've just reminded me that I'm supposed to be making a granny square blanket for DC2, due in less than 3 months!!

I'm making 20cm squares in all shades of autumn colours, so great for using up oddments and end of line bargains from the wool shop!

Are you a member of the revelry website? If not, join. There are loads and loads of patterns for granny square blankets on there. I realise you don't really need a pattern, but it will give you an idea of how much yarn you will need.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 02/08/2011 16:54

Sorry, meant to write ravelry!

purpleknittingmum · 02/08/2011 17:41

Purplefrog, I have just in the last 10 mins done the first square and thought about weighing it! It is a quite pathetic 6g, so by that I need 840g, so I should have enough!! YAY!!

Thanks FruitSaladIsNotPudding, I am on ravelry, still a bit new to that!

I am knitting my daughter a cardigan as well just now and am knitting fingerless mittens for either a charity shop or my daughter's Girls Brigade! I hope to do at least a square a day. I am off work for a bit so will try and do a few more. I expect I will need more help when it comes to sewing up and edging!! :o

Cattleprod, that blanket sounds good! I have a knitting pattern for a log cabin effect blanket I want to do for me and my husbands bed, just have to decide on the colours!

Wow thanks Fruitsalad - I've just signed up to ravelry!

I had no idea there were loads of different ways to do granny squares. There's a gorgeous one with a star in the middle (number 29) - I'd love to make one but I learned by watching MIL and I have no idea what the pattern instructions mean or how to go about making it!

purpleknittingmum · 02/08/2011 17:57

Yes I told my daughter there are other versions of granny squares but I am sticking to the basic ones for now until I am a bit more confident with crochet! Have seen one with a heart on the middle

There are some really cool patterns on there. I'm currently making a blanket called flowers on snow from ravelry - basically lots of different coloured flowers and white surrounds. Gorgeous, and great for using random oddments!

purpleknittingmum · 15/12/2011 19:53

Well last night I finished the blanket!!

Will try and add a photo to my profile if I can remember how to do it!

Did see the start of this thread but would love to see your blanket sometime.

Will you be changing your name to purplecrocketmum now in honour of the finished article? Xmas Grin

BigBaubledBertha · 15/12/2011 22:48

That would have been mildly amusing if I could spell crochet - as it was it was just plain daft.Xmas HmmXmas Blush

I'll try again - purplecrochetmum

purpleknittingmum · 16/12/2011 06:12

I did consider a change but I prefer knitting, and I am quite used to PKM now!

Very nice :) You must be proud of it.

purpleknittingmum · 16/12/2011 07:33

I am pretty pleased with it, first major crochet thing I have done! There are 3 mistakes on squares that can be spotted and on some of them I didn't do the 2 chain between the sets of trebles but the joining rows covered that up. So out of 140 squares to have 5 mistakes is pretty good going!

Just need to learn how to do increase and decrease now!

I made a baby blanket for a friend. I know there are a number of mistakes but they are impossible to spot. Crochet seems to be very forgiving!!

5 is good going :)

purpleknittingmum · 16/12/2011 07:42

On one square instead of 3 trebles I did 2, and on 2 squares I have done 4! You do have to hunt for them but I know they are there!

I have a cardigan I did a few years ago and the pattern is slightly lacy with a wavy line, and on one sleeve I have made one mistake and it doesn't go from left to right at one point, it just goes left, right, left, straight up, right. Annoys me every time I wear it but I would have to take out the sleeve and rip out most of it and do it again. Everyone tells me to leave it but I really want to do it!
