Scoubidous

I know loads of you must know about this craze. I am considering getting my dd some for Christmas. She is 5 (6 in March) and very artistic, but do you think she would be too young for scoubidous? A quick glance at a book the other day did make me think the knotting etc would be too hard for her. I don't want to get it for her if she has no hope of doing anything with it for months. How old was your dd when she first started making things with scoubidous?

not too young at all...but hasnt the craze passed..or is that just here!!!

Miaou · 14/11/2005 12:20

She might find it a bit hard lonelymum - my dds are just starting to get into it and they are 8 and 7 (the 7 year old can't do more than a few knots before she loses interest though!)

Have you thought about a french knitting doll instead? dd2 got one in an ELC learn to knit kit, and it is really good. I reckon your dd aged 5+ could manage it ok.

If the craze has passed, that will mean it will be easier to buy in the shops!

Interesting Miaou. The only person I have seen doing it was a classmate of ds1's in the summer so she must have been 9. Yes I think maybe dd is too young. I have a French knitting ring of my own and an old wodden cotton reel with 4 nails hammered into it that my dad made for me when I was a child, but I will look out for a knitting ring too. Does it come with projects to make as I am not good at ideas.

sorry. have emailed them now. my hotmail hasnt been working!

Agree about the scoubidous for a £1 in pound shops - that's where I bought them for dd2! At that price you can't go wrong really.

Re. the french knitting etc - you can buy the knitting dolls as a kit, but a lot of them are rubbish (too narrow, insides not smooth enough etc) - we have been given four different kits over the years and this ELC one (general knitting kit) is the first decent one we have come across. It does have ideas in too - dd2 is making a headband (three lengths of french knitting plaited together, quite sweet)

5 for £1 in Claires!

I think the craze does seem to have passed now. My older dd and friends spent all their time doing it in summer but don't touch them now (Tamgotchis have taken over). I ran the craft shop at our school autumn fayre on Saturday and the most popular makes were badges, masks, decorating baubles and colouring calendars. There was a huge box of Scoubies and the only people who went near them were 2 dads who said they'd always wanted a go but didn't know how to do them! Their children melted away in embarrassment...

suzi2 · 15/11/2005 22:29

Are scoobies that kind of plastic macrame thing? Always wondered...

Miaou · 15/11/2005 22:33

yes that's right suzi.

Crazes seem to last longer round here - our kids often make them in golden time at school.

Or maybe the craze just took a lot longer to reach us oop north....

My DS1 loves Scoobies, hope he's not going to stop making them now as we have just bought him a huge pack, he will be 7 in January and has been doing them since early Sept. He seems to have periods of time when he is really into them then he sets them aside and picks them up again later.
