Learning to crochet - right or left handed

Flush with success at knitting scarves I'm toying with learning to crochet. I've got some time off work coming up followin a minor operation and it might be fun...if I'm honest I want to learn to do amigurumi specifically Smile

I'm planning on getting Crocheting for Dummies (unless anyone wants to suggest a better book) as I like the knitting one a lot, and the website. My main dilemma is do I teach myself right or left-handed? I'm a leftie but I knit RH as that was what my mum taught me, and all the books show RH knitting.

Does it make as much of a difference with crochet as with knitting? If I can manage knitting RH will I probably be ok with crochet? I'm vaguely ambidextrous in that I write LH, throw a ball LH but bat in cricket, hold a golf club etc RH.

Hi, I saw your post yesterday but wanted to have a try crocheting left handed, from the result, I suggest you teach yourself right handed. Also because I had to google amigurumi I found this site that has a few free patterns on it www.crochetme.com/ good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you! Someone sent me a lovely amigurumi book which had RH instructions so given I'd got that and what you said I started practising last night, I've managed to do the chain and some DC which isn't too bad so far. It didn't feel as 'wrong' as I'd been expecting which is good.
