Button jar envy - how/where can I get one?

My Mum has an enormous collection - from her birth mother, her own mother, and her aunt - plus her own!
If I went and got me a button jar would it be the same?

I can't believe she wouldn't even give you a couple to start you off!! Shock

I had a problem last night - I was finally finishing off my crochet slippers, and I needed some buttons for the straps.
My button tin is here at the shop, so I had to rely on anything that might be in DH's mum's sewing tin.
She definitely wasn't very crafty, cos the sewing tin had a set of shirt buttons, and a few odds (like about 10 buttons).
I ended up finding 2 buttons the right size for my buttonhole - one was pink and the other blue! (the slippers are green!)

Last summer, it was useful having all my sewing stuff here, but I'm finding it increasingly annoying as I'm doing more stuff at home now (last summer it all had to be done here in secret, cos it was my wedding dress, but now I can do stuff in the open at home, and I've got nothing there!)

Seed a new jar. You know you want to.

expatinscotland · 16/05/2011 18:17

I have button envy, too.

But I also have a beautiful selection of beads from costume jewellry that belonged to my grandmother. I'm currently making my mother a Rosary from some of these beads. Basically, the necklaces were a bit dated, but the vintage beads are lovely. So I spend a few hours just going through them, laying them out with a bunch of vintage pins, thinking about what to do with them - might make some suncatches and Christmas ornaments with some, too - then I saw a picture of a Rosary and thought, Brill! A great gift from Mama, a Rosary made with beads from some of her mother's necklaces.

They do big slections at craft fairs. I have picked up mixtures of lovely buttons from there in the past.

I have inherited the small button collection from my gran recently. seems the only thing she really ever bought per project was buttons. I have a collection of threads that is astounding. a lot of them on the old fashioned wooden cotton reels. love the feel of them and collecting them as they empty. I think i need to sort my button collection out though, it need expending

Seabright · 17/05/2011 23:21

Look at online catalogues of local auction houses, I've bought habadashery stuff there before. You don't want Bohams & the like, but the sort of auction house that does house clearences.

moominthecorner · 18/05/2011 19:00

thats a great idea Seabright, thanks!

Inspired by all this button worship I'm making a jam jar lid cover for mine at the moment from this book you can see it on the cover - I'm quite hopeful especially since I am rubbish at crochet...

ooh what a lovely thread!
hey i have a craft forum and there is a button swap about to happen - it is a cheap'n'easy swap - price guide of £10 - come check it out www.crafteroo.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=8300.0

sign up by the end of the week so you just about have time :)

i too am a button addict - i buy and sell vintage buttons and become very attached Wink to them - they do hold a lot of sentimental value and i have loads from various family members -

PrincessOfWails · 19/05/2011 10:38

But I have no buttons to swap!! Smile

Loving the high number of posts on this innocent thread! Who'd have thought it?!

ah see most of the people involved in the swap won't be sending buttons from their own stash - they won't be able to part with them! So they will have to go to the haberdasher's buy some buttons for swapping and some for themselves - you see button addiction is a terrible thing! Plus for me buttons were a gateway addition i have a massive haberdashery stash!

moominthecorner · 19/05/2011 20:03

we're a button support group...did I mention my slippers? i got them from Schuh (I did not pay that price btw) and they're COVERED in buttons, I love them. And now they're getting old...the buttons are dropping off!! Brilliant!!

I finished my jar cover btw - big deal for me, I never finish anything!

moominthecorner · 12/06/2011 19:49

Just see where button love gets you...this thread inspired me to reorganise my sewing storage...its taken weeks but I'm done. Want to see??? I'm very dusty now but it was worth it!

Piglett · 13/06/2011 13:39

the Sewing Machine shop in Southport sells old buttons for a penny each in aid of the air ambulance - or go in grab a lot and give them a tenner in my experience. Normal non button fetish people also donate them for sale

savoycabbage · 13/06/2011 14:07

I have a glass vase full of buttons and a button tin.

moominthecorner · 13/06/2011 22:17

There's such a thing as non button fetish people?!

Piglett · 14/06/2011 13:30

I don't understand them either moominthecorner but they must be getting the buttons from somewhere (rather odd people IMO but I am grateful for their existence in this corner of the world

I put the word out in my office about my haberdashery obsession. Button's ribbon and odds and ends of fabric. I didn't do it to make anyone feel guilty, I was saying that I LOVE buttons, beads, ribbon and fabric and have a huge stash and love making things for people. Lots of babies due before I had mine in December and made lovely gifts for them all from my stash. But gained so many donations. One lady had been left this stuff by her mum and she has no interest at all in it and was going to bin it all. Three black bags of vintage fabric, ribbon, ric rac, lace etc. Two huge sweetie jars of buttons. She didn't want anything, but have given her 12 jars of honey as a thank you.

I have an old chest of drawers from my great great aunt which I keep my ribbon & fabric stand in. I have my buttons sorted in shades in various pretty jars, mostly courtesy of great great aunt again, the sweetie jars are full of whites/natural and browns/tans. I love my buttons, but I do try to use them in my craft projects, or it would be a bit weird just stashing them.

Charity shops have been most successful in enlarging my stash pre-work colleagues. Often they'd have a jar or tin full. I also like beads too, charity shops and jumble sales are great for these.

My mum is a hoarder of everything, I like to hoard haberdashery. MiL is fabric obsessed only and her mum button obsessed. I love love love my collection, and the envy of all my friends.

There are many people I know who just don't understand why you would want to keep buttons, ribbons, fabric.

I am itching to start a new project just limited time with DD as she's almost crawling and has a great snatch reflex of whatever I am working on.

eBay is a great way to expand as well, often bought the odd baggy of mixed buttons. Often searching by distance first can help you make a decision on whether to buy, you can cut out large postage costs if you are happy to collect. Often find the postage is high because of the weight.

moominthecorner · 15/06/2011 17:51

Oooo post some pictures Smile

anothabubbla · 15/06/2011 21:57

For a quick fix, root through kids' clothes. There'll be a few funky buttons on the labels. Snip 'em and shove it in a small jam jar. Bonne Maman Grin jar for starters. And find an Alladin's cave shop or market stall to top it up.
DD spends many a happy half hour with a tray and a load of buttons.

moominthecorner · 16/06/2011 19:09

I'm with you on the beauty of Bonne Maman.

rockinhippy · 17/06/2011 13:27

OOOooo Piglet thanks for that info my Parents live in Southport & very close to that shop too - I've never been into it before as don't trust myself not to buy more than I want to carry home on the train - but will be checking it out & stocking up on buttons if I get to visit there again :)
