Talk to me about felt boards

please. Smile

My ds is 17 mo and recently I've watched a few story telling videos on you tube where they use what seems to be a felt board plus felt animals to illustrate the story. I thought this would be a fun thing to have at home, but would love some advice from people who have used them before, as I've never seen one in the flesh.

How big should I get the board? A quick google shows many sizes. This would be used at home and occasionally at a toddler group I go to, with about 5 toddlers.

What's the best background colour?

If I want to make one myself, how do I go about it?

What about the figures? Felt? Laminated paper+ velcro?

Anything else I should think about before spending money?

TIA

Fuzzy Felt!
I loved it when I was a kid. My DD loves it but I now curse all the little bits. They're cheap to buy, (or I wouldn't have bought them) :o
The background is slightly prickly, I'm not sure what it is, velcro would be too prickly.
The bits you stick on are just felt so you could easily make your own.

Thanks for that. So I will learn to hate it, will I? Grin

We have a huge selection of fuzzy felt that has cost us no more then £4 in total. We've picked up so many sets for 30p in charity shops etc and keep them all in a plastic storage box.

Both 10 year old and 2 year old lov playing with it and we use it for stories too.

Ah, charity shops, how I miss them! (I live abroad). Another thing to ask my sisters to keep an eye out for. I think I'll go on a trawl around our local toyshops and see if I can see any board in real life, so I have a better idea of what to make.

I think we got most of ours from £1 shops.

You may learn to hate it. I tend to get DD to pick everything up before I hoover. Any little bits she misses are sacrificed. :o

Same here bilblio. It's strictly a tale thing in our house ad if it's not packed away it's hoover food. Used to be the same rule for Lego too but I'm convinced that's what ruined mine but I've not told DD that though!

Cies - My poor kids would have very few toys if it weren't for charity shops

Ooh no, I wouldn't hoover up lego, that's too expensive to replace.

Most of our toys are charity shop finds, donations, magazine freebies or in the case of the lego (and quite a few other bits) they're 30+ years old and were mine or my brothers originally.
