Making a fancy dress costume for DS, need some advice - I'm a complete novice

I've decided that this year I'm going to make DS's Halloween costume. I know it's only May but I've never done this before so I figure it'll take me the next five months to get my backside in gear, buy all of the stuff, and then put it together. I could just buy one but I've got it in my head now that I want to make it and I'm stubborn and it's something my mam used to do when we were little so I really want to give it a decent go.

I've decided to make him a Peter Pan costume, the traditional green one. The tights are easy, I can buy those. And the shoes because I can just get some brown felt and cover his existing shoes to make little brown boots. I have some questions though:

  • roughly how much fabric will I need to make a rough/rustic pair of shorts and a tunic for an average sized two and a half year old (his age at Halloween)?
  • which material would be easiest to work with and what would be the best size needle for hand stitching the seams?
  • what would be the best material for the hat?

Thanks in advance :)

I would say one meter of fabric would be enough.

No idea about needle sizes, I tend to just use what I find lying around!

I would suggest felt for the hat because it won't fray, won't need hemming and it's quite sturdy so it should hold itself up.

Have you looked at patterns? It will make your life easier.

Have found this though that looks straightforward, it's all made of felt so no worries about fraying.

Sorry, fleece for the tunic.

Wow! Thank you so much, that is excellent :)
