Would anyone like to join me in a Kids Clothes Week Challenge next week?

Basically, all you have to do is dedicate at least an hour a day to making clothes for your DC (or other people's DC) next week.

All the info is here.

I'm quite excited, but could do with some moral support from other MNers who would like to join in! I can't imagine I will make much in 7 hours, so will probably be putting in more hours than that Grin

I think I will also write a tutorial on making shorts for kids and post it on my blog on the monday.

I should add I will be focussing entirely on boys clothes, for my DS, and have almost no expeirence in making clothes.

OMG I am in Grin

Just checked out the FAQ and you can do sewing, knitting and crocheting.

My main thing at the minute is crochet but I have not ventured into clothes yet.

My sewing skills are of the very novice beginner. Would kids clothes be too much to start with?

I am going to have a trawl through the flickr page for inspiration :)

overmydeadbody · 02/05/2011 21:41

Yay! Frazzled I am so glad you're in! Grin

I cannot crochet to save my life but I imagine if you can then kids clothes can't be too hard right?

I used to think clothes were harder than other things to sew, as a novice, but now that I do a lot of sewing I find clothes relatively straightforward, compared to, say, wallets and bags!

If you have girls then it's quite easy to sew little skirts and pillow case dresses even as a novice.

I haven't looked at the flickr group yet, shall have a look and no doubt feel intimidated!

OP posts:
frazzledblob · 02/05/2011 22:12

There are some blooming lovely makes on that flickr group!

I refuse to feel intimidated these days only inspired as what I can't do today I may be able to one day through hard work and hours of frustration Grin

I have a shirt dress I have been meaning to learn to sew for DD and the pillow case dress is a great idea. Need something simple for 2yr old DS?

Crochet wise I will look for a simple shrug pattern for DD and i'm not sure what to do for DS Confused

So OMDB do you know what you are going to do for your DS?

overmydeadbody · 02/05/2011 22:35

Frazzled that is a good attitude, I shall embrace it! No more feelings of inadequacy and intimidation!

For your two yr old DS you could try these bandana shorts? You could use any fabric, doesn't have to be bandanas, it ujst look s quite simple.

Or a bow tie or tie? My DS loves these, there are links from here

What am I going to make? Good question! I have lots of things I want to make, but inreality won't have the time or energy, but I hope to make him two or three pairs of shorts, a reversible sun hat and he wants another tie, in purple.

OP posts:
frazzledblob · 02/05/2011 23:14

I am loving those bandana shorts and ties! i am going to stick a crochet tank top on my list for DS aswell.

This is going to add up to more than an hour a night but it really helps having something to aim for :) Although I may not finish everything!

It was that attitude and loads of frustration that resulted in me finally cracking how crochet works. Just need to apply it to the sewing machine now :)

overmydeadbody · 03/05/2011 16:32

Love the sound of a crochet tank top for your DS!

Anyone else interested in joining?

OP posts:
frazzledblob · 03/05/2011 21:07

May have to rethink the tank top, can't find a pattern :(

Where is everyone Confused I think this is a fab idea and will keep bumping Grin

overmydeadbody · 04/05/2011 08:01

Oh no! Have you tried searching online for free tutorials for tank tops? Or searched for vests? (I think Some people call them vests?)

I am waiting for the hoards to roll in and join us! Grin

OP posts:
overmydeadbody · 04/05/2011 21:02

Right, my list:

1 pair of shorts with zip and button waist made from navy and cream ticking fabric, with denim back pockets unpicked from a pair of old jeans.

1 Pair of trousers refashioned from some grey and white striped adult women's trousers that my sister was about to send to the charity shop.

1 pair of elasticated waist trousers, not sure what fabric to use yet, perhaps some nordic fabric with reindeer all over them? will have to consult DS, as he will have to wear them.

1 purple gingham tie and 1 purple gingham bow tie.

That should be enough!

Sounds good MrsWolf! Like you, I have books full of lovely projects that I somehow never get round to starting. Do you have a particular project from one of the books that you'd like to start with?

I'm doing this! My To Do list is comically long, especially considering the recent arrival of DS2. I'll be blogging my progress most days. Among other things am aiming for a bucket hat for DS1, shorts for DS1, and trousers and jacket for DS2.

Over I'm excited to see your shorts - I am a bit ticking obsessed atm Blush

Mrswolf I've only got boys, but have heard pillowcase dress is v v quick and good beginner project. Maybe we can help if you get stuck too.

Hopefully · 07/05/2011 18:24

frazzled haqve you tried www.ravelry.com for a pattern? and definitely search vest - most online tutorials are american, so will be called vest.

overmydeadbody · 09/05/2011 16:30

Hi Hopefully! Good to see you here! Will be great to see what you make!

I have made the first pair of shorts (yay) with ticking fabric, they are lovely! I have almost finished writing up a tutorial for my blog on them, so that should be up later today. Then I can start on the elasticated waist shorts.

Anyone else made anything yet?

OP posts:
frazzledblob · 09/05/2011 18:06

Hello

Thanks to both OMDB and Hopefully for the vest suggestion, have lots of patterns now :)

I have not started yet.

Once the kids are tucked up in bed I can get started. I spent all day in work wishing I was at home out in the garden with my crochet and a nice cup of tea :( Grin

Hopefully · 09/05/2011 18:48

Frazzled i quite often spend the day in the garden, but picking up my needles and/or a cup of tea is rarely permitted by DS1!

Today I managed to trace and cut a pattern piece the wrong way up (on directional print fabric) three times. It was ridiculous. Apart from that I'm making good progress though Grin

overmydeadbody · 09/05/2011 20:39

Hopefully I have done that too, too many times to remember, cutting out fabric the wrog way round!

Look forward to seeing what you make!

My shorts are finished and blogged about here. The tutorial took me longer than it took me to make the shorts!

frazzledblob · 12/05/2011 20:10

How is everyone doing?

I have been a bit busy here so have not made it onto the sewing machine. The tank top for DS is looking lovely. I am hoping to finish in time for his birthday. I then need to get cracking with the shrug for DD as it will soon be her birthday.

Envy at spending the day in the garden. I managed to sit for a record breaking 10mins one afternoon this week with my crochet before WW3 broke out amongst DD and DS over a barbie Hmm

overmydeadbody · 14/05/2011 21:35

frazzled I have been so busy I have completely neglected to post about what I have been doing on here or on my blog or on the flickr group, I just can't keep up with it all!

My house is littered with thread and fabric scraps all over the carpet, I so need to hoover (and do the washing up), but I have succesfully made two pairs of shorts, one pair of trousers and have cut out all the fabric for a third pair of shorts thatI am hoping to sew up tonight!

the problem is, real life, family, work, and visiting friends have all got in the way of my ambitious plans! I wish I could retire to a monestasry or something and just dedicate all my time to sewing without any interuptions. I'd be so good then!

OP posts:
Hopefully · 15/05/2011 15:55

My week hasn't been as productive as I'd hoped, but I did make and blog some trousers for the baby and a hat for the toddler. I've also finished a pair of trousers for the toddler (an Oliver + S pattern, totally recommend them), which I'm hoping to photograph and blog tomorrow. And two inches of a knitted jumper, but that hardly seems worth writing home about.

All in all, not a disastrous week, productively speaking, but not my finest ever Grin

overmydeadbody · 16/05/2011 17:45

Lovely stuff Hopefully, I love your blog! I've seen those Oliver and S trousers made by so many people and recommended by so many, they really do seem like a great pattern, and they look fabulous!

It's been a great week, I 've sewn more than I ever have before, my sewing machine needs a service now! I think I need a break from sewing for a bit, think I will try my hand at jewelery making this week!

OP posts:
frazzledblob · 16/05/2011 20:21

can I sign up for jewellery making week? Grin is there anything in particular you are going to make?

I am loving your makes omdb and hopefully.

I have had to restart the tank top for DS Blush it was either that or finding a way to stop him growing! i am sure he has shot up in the time i started the first one.

MrsvWoolf how did you get on with the dress?

overmydeadbody · 17/05/2011 16:55

Hey frazzled, well my good friend is getting married in July and has asked me to make 6 necklaces for her bridesmaids, out of beads, she has already given me all the stuff I'll need so it's not too hard, but will be great fun! So many pretty beads!

Good luck with the vest, maybe you should make it large so that he hasn't outgrown it by the time you finish it!
