My husband is a professional upholsterer - it can be technical and difficult or easy - it really depends on the type of chair. It is often a lot more than just sewing as the frame can require a huge amount of woodwork/restoration and you also have to get the layers of padding/foam etc just right.
Why don't you go on an upholstery course for a week - will cost about the same as an upholsterer, you could take your chair with you and you will learn the correct techniques?

I do appreciate its more than just sewing but I think the frame of mine is pretty good so I figured I had a good place to start

I love the idea of doing a course, thank you!

I used to take a course, which was great. The materials/equipment were included in the cost, though most people supplied their own fabric. I'd really recommend it for a beginner, as there are quite a lot of technical bits and bobs, and the equipment you need can be pricy if you decide you don't like it.

JA Milton are good for supplies of scrim, webbing, tacks etc.

thanks midnightexpress, i've had a look and can't find a course near me so looks like i'll be going for the diy approach! thanks for the link, off to have a look now
