Oh you've just missed that new magazine thing that came with free needles, wool and an instruction DVD.

I've found tutorials on youtube really good for helping me remember crochet.

not sure about the sewing, but there are lots of how to videos for knitting on You Tube. Or have a look for details of any beginners courses at your local yarn shops as many of them run classes these days.

Also, there may be a local stitch'n'bitch or other knitting group.

ravelry is a good website with local groups etc and links to patterns, videos etc.

If you have learnt to knit before, it'll all come flooding back if you just give it a go. aran weight wool and 5mm needles are better for starting out as well.

Lots of knitting demos on you tube.
You could join Ravelry (a knitting forum) and then in some of the british groups on you will find details of real life knitting groups where you can go along for help, support and cake!

Or your local independent wool shop might have a group/classes.

Mothersmilk - My suggestion would be to go to your local yarn store and ask them if they know any knit and natter groups. I belong to my local one and between us we have helped several beginners become proficient knitters!

I run a knit and natter at work, too, and we have one person who started off clueless) began with mini hats for Innocent smoothies, moved onto proper hats and had now graduated to some very complicated (and lovely) stuffed animals. With help - and the right patterns and yarn - it's amazing what quick progress can be made.
