Artist's Blogs V the mystery of the artist

Hi,
I am currently giving my website a overhaul. I do paintings / illustration and also work with wood and glass. I've been advised to start a blog as a way to pull in punters (so to speak) and to link to FB, Twitter etc.

But i am quite a private person and i'm not sure i'm that interesting either. Yes i could describe the thinking, stories etc. behind each piece i do but would that kill the mystery of it? If i just put the images up then it's not really a blog.

Not sure what to do. Does anyone here have any advice? I can't help but think that blogs might be more useful if your work is leaning toward the more 'crafty' and perhaps less so if you normally sell through galleries or do publishing work etc. But i do need to get more people to see my work obviously and want to take advantage of the internet.

TIA

You could just put the pictures upif thats what you are comfortable with.
There are plenty of purely photo/picture blogs out there

I follow a few blogs which are 99% images, alot of illustrators blog in that way.

think of it as a public sketchbook.

Why don't you start however you feel most comfortable and go from there. You can always develop your style/level of comfort zone.

Mine is mindless waffle about what I've made, others have made or just things that have happened.

I sincerely doubt many people really read mine, despite having a fair number of followers.

Thankyou for coming over here to answer me Grin. I think my problem is that crafters blogs are more interesting - the step by step instructions and the thought processes. My paintings tend to be more of a brain vomit so i'm not sure how well it would work written down.

Thankyou - i think i will start with minimum words and go from there.

Start with the brain vomit - how ever much or little and dont care too much what other people think or you wont be you.

I have a FB page for work, and I also blog on a website that sells my work. I get a huge amounts of hits on the FB page and the volume of traffic to my own website has increased so it is worth doing!

On the FB page I simply upload pictures and maybe say where they can be found (eg which website or gallery). I blog occasionally on the site where I sell as the owners of the website say it increases sales and is good for sending viewers to your page; it does seem to work.

I have to say where others seem to have deep, meaningful thoughts about their work processes, I am much more likely to blog "not done much work 'cos it's the school holidays and I've been watching The Killing on iPlayer...."
