What would you call that itchy course kinda wool?

I've ran out an oatmeal/greyish colour wool, mid project! I was given it so i'm unsure where it came from or what it's called!

It looks like normal wool, but it's quite course and itchy, almost like gardening yarn, but not as rough. Don't suppose you would know what it's called and where i can get some from?!

It sounds like it is 100% wool, rather than a blend of wool and polyester, which would make it softer. I think it is unlikely that you would be able to get exactly the same wool as there are so many, but there are a lot of online wool shops that have some great collections, such as Loop or Get Knitted or Fiddlesticks or Great British Yarns.
All the above outlets have the kind of wool you describe in all different weights, from 4 ply to aran, so you'll probably be able to find a toning colour if you can't find the exact match.

Thanks mablemurple - i did think it must be 100%. Thought i had another ball knocking around, but alas, nope!

if you have a local yarn shop you could pop in. If it's local Get Knitted is yarn heaven and they are very very helpful. It's well worth going to a shop to get a good match. Some experts can look at an unlabelled ball and tell you exactly what it is.

Thanks kellstar, I'll check it out. X

You can test what kind of material it is by a flame proof. Do it over the sink please, mind your fingers and don't let your dcs see you do it.
If you take a length of yarn and light the end with a match, then cotton smells like paper, wool like human hair, nylon melts and acrylic forms a hard little bubble at the end.

Wow dutchoma, brilliant! I'm going to do that just because...! Thank you.
