Tailoring - how difficult is it?

I'm fairly proficient with a sewing machine/hand sewing and my brother has just asked me if I would be able to make him a suit. How difficult is it? I am good at following clothing patterns and have made clothes for myself - but have never attempted proper suit tailoring before. Should I steer clear or perhaps give it a go? He isn't well off enough to pay a professional tailor, but really hates off the peg style suits and really wants a slightly more interesting suit than the sort that one generally finds in Next etc. Any suggestions?

If you're not confident, try it in lining fabric first - the £1 a metre stuff!

Otherwise, if you're competent at understanding pattern jargon, it shouldn't be any harder than anything else you've done Grin

PS, I don't really "do" patterns and make kids trousers by drawing on greasproof paper. I've also just made a dress by tracing the pattern onto printer paper from the computer screen! It seems to have worked lol

Trousers will be fine. Would agree with purplepidjin to make the jacket up in cheap cotton cloth first. That way you can make notes all over it to help in the making, like 'lengthen sleeves' etc. Good luck.

Thank you - I will start with the trousers and see how I get on - if he isn't impressed then I will send him to a local tailor - at least just getting the jacket done will cost less.
Any tips hugely appreciated!
