Sewing machine ideas

Hi,
My Mum bought me a lovely reconditioned sewing machine yesterday, she is a fantastic seamstress and makes everything. I have picked up a few tips along the way growing up watching her, so am not an absolute beginner, but would like some simple easy projects I could make on my new sewing machine.
I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of some good patterns, free if poss! Grin

I also thought of making something for her as a thankyou for getting me it... not sure what though?
Any ideas gratefully received

TIA Smile

Not sure if you can get anything on the net but there are some lovely craft magazines out there with patterns.

Or e-bay secondhand books I'm sure there will be plenty on there.

I used to keep all crafty patterns but realised I wasnt going to use them and bined them. If I remember Prima etc.

I've got this and it's very nice and easy to follow.
There's also a new pocket edition out now too.

......sorry, not free. But several projects for your money.
Have a look around on line for free patterns.

Sew Hip is a lovely sewing mag with lots of achievable patterns in there from clothes to practical things.

AND, I'm in the next issue !!

soccerwidow · 03/03/2011 21:11

sew hip magazine is really good. Comes out at the end of every month was £3.99 but think it has gone up to £4.99.

It has a nice mixture of projects - clothes, toys, bags, home stuff etc at various ability levels.

This blogger tried to make something from sew hip every month during 2010

Also there are lots of great blogs, and tutorials out there - you really don't have to actually buy a pattern or book (not that it stops me lol)

This is one of my favs sewmamasew I spend hours flicking through all the archives and clicking on all the links! They tend to have a theme for the month and select links from all over blogland. At the moment it is "pillow month" or cushions in English.

There are tons of blogs on the net = there was a post with some favourites in this section a month or so ago - with some fab easy tutorials. I'd give these a go or buy some books rather than buy loads of magazines. Whilst I appreciate that Kryshees is in the next issue of Sew Hip, magazines are nearly five pounds an issue where most books (with 20 plus patterns) only cost about a tenner
Something easy like a tissue holder belladia.typepad.com/photos/travel_tissue_holder_tuto/#tp might be an idea as a first project present for Mum? Have fun and let us know how you get on

Lots here, although I haven't tried them yet.

Kryshees · 04/03/2011 10:48

pants at the prices going up, mines on a sub for the year still. SH is still cheaper than the Sew magazine at about £6!! ekk

Sewmamasew is lovely and ditto about all the blogs etc.

My library also has loads of sewing books in for inspiration, worth checking yours out.

check your library for books. A small fee to request a book that's in another branch, but much cheaper for having a look about.

Ooh, thanks some excellent ideas, will have a look at all these links now.
I never thought of blogs, don't really understand the whole 'blog' thing so never really think of looking, will do now though.
Thanks again Smile
