I want to crochet a nice small/medium size every day kinda bag (my first project).

I just wondered if you have seen any nice ones on your cyber travels?

Have you tried ravelry, they have some good patterns on there. Im new to crochet and am thinking of starting a bag too.

Hi. There's a lovely blog called Attic24 that has a crocheted bag, and lots of instruction on crochet in general.

spikemomma · 03/03/2011 12:53

Thanks, yes, i've seen those two sites. I love both of them! They do make me feel rather incompetent though! I should go back and look specifically for bags on them shouldn't i?!

Cloudpuff, i'm making a tote bag below at the moment, which you might fancy having a go at. I'm doing a smaller version, without cord for the handle. I just wondered if there were any other nice, easy ones out there, which i could take inspiration from and use for the one i'm making, or my next bag project.

If you want a handbag type shape, how about this?

Ch 34, turn
DC in each ch along
Ch 1 turn
9 rows
Dc aroundall four edges
Finish off.

Make 6 granny squares of three rows (so you have a set of three in each corner and one in the middle)

Overstitch the grannies into a line, join to make a circle, then attach at the bottom to your base. Attach readymade bag handles, or ch however many you want the Tc into the chain and attach.

No idea if that'll work, I just made it up for you Wink

Oh, thanks Purplepidjin - so kind to write that out! I'll defo give that a bash you lovely lady. Of course, i'll need to teach myself how to do granny squares, which were actually next on my list! I do heart this crochet biz (well, until i get stumped on following patterns, but i think it'll come with trial and error... a lot of error Smile)

I don't tend to bother with patterns, just make it up as I go along Blush but then, my mum taught me how when i was about 6...

Granny square:

Ch 4, join with sl st
Ch2, 2tr in same stitch
3tr in each stich around, join with sl st
From here, you will be crocheting in the gaps between stitches
Ch 2, 2tr in same st
"Ch1 3tr" x2 in each st around, join with sl st (this gives you corners)
Ch2, 2tr in same st. Carry on as before, except that you need to do "3tr ch 3tr" in each corner, but on the "3tr" in between

You can keep going like this until you get bored and have a mahooooooooosive granny square, just keep increasing the gaps between corners each time

Let me know if the pattern works!

I have been crocheting for about a month and to begin with I bought lets get crafting magazine which had free hooks and yarn the instuctions were to hard to follow so I looked on you tube and started with Granny squares, they are really easy when you get going, you just have to watch for the American terms. I endend up with a pink blanket for my dd and i was so proud of it.

I treated myself to a book called 200 blocks by Jan Eaton and its quite good. Im currently trying to finish a cushion cover which the book said will take a few evenings and so far has taken me two weeks. I spend too much time looking on Ravelry in awe of all the lovely things other people have made.

People take the mick out of me a bit and call me an old biddy (Im early 30s) but I dont care, I enjoy it. (I even had a few glasses of Sherry the other night while crocheting :) )

cloud I'm 29 and have the same username on ravelry - 'tis my favouritest place ever!!!

I crochet for prem babies - some gets sold, some goes to Lisa's stars - if you want to see what I've done, www.facebook.com/mimapants

Thanks Purplepidjin, i'll definatley try your squares recipe...recipe?! I mean pattern! I'm so envious that you can make up your own patterns, wish i'd been taught young.

I looked at what i've crocheted so far and i've bodged somewhere as one side of it seems to grow out, i must be adding a stitch when i turn or something. Annoying, i was doing so well...

Cloudpuff, i've made a few flowers following Youtube, i found it really helpful. I'll defo do some squares now you two have inspired me. I had a sip of brandy (well it was a hot toddy, as i felt a bit rough!) as i crocheted last night! Retro and making do mind set is all the rage, so I think we're more down with the kids than grannish Cloudpuff! Honest...Hmm

I just made this but didn't bother with the fancy collar, just did trebles in feathery stuff all round. Very cute!

spikemomma · 05/03/2011 17:44

That's nice purplepidjin. That's funny it' a shrug as I was thinking about doing a shrug when I get more competent. Also nice to see what other people are making.

It's part of a princess-fairy-gypsy-wedding dress a that's been comissioned for a little girl in a wheelchair. I'm currently buried under mountains of pink and purple glittery things!

cloudpuff · 10/03/2011 10:54

Finally finished the cushion cover. My dd loves it as its the same colours as her blanket.
Love the amigurumi pics purple, I managed to make a small teddy for my dd, its a bit wonky and I had to use ear rings for eyes buts its still cute(ish)

purplepidjin · 12/03/2011 21:08

Thanks, cloud. I'm planning to do my first craft fair [eek] next month, and am going to put a basket of the amigurumi critters (as keyrings) out at £1 each. I'm hunting down baby dollies for people to play dress-up with, and will print pics of the bigger stuff as modelled by the people they were made for.

And I'm pissed off, I'm supposed to be making a waterproof leg-cover for a lad in a wheelchair, ordered camo print kagoul fabric off ebay and it didn't turn up today Angry so the sewing will have to wait till Thursday. Instead I'm planning on reupholstering my sofas tomorrow Hmm

cloudpuff · 15/03/2011 11:13

Good luck with the craft fair. Let me know how it goes.

purplepidjin · 17/03/2011 08:37

Thanks, just need to fill out the forms and send a cheque Shock
