how to crochet flat circle?

I need to crochet a simpple flat circle either using single or double crochet. How should I start? How long should be the chain?
When should I increase? I have found a video on youtube but it is not working. One comment says:
Round 2: increase in every stitch.

Round 3: 1 stitch between increases.

round 4: 2 stitches between increases.

round 5: 3 stitches between increases.

etc.

What should be Round 1 then?
Is this the easiest way to crochet the circle?

Thank you!

Chain depends on how big you want your circle to end up. I use the smallest possible to make bootees for premature babies so:

In English

Ch 3, sl st to join

Ch 1 and turn, 2dc in same st, 3 dc in each st round, sl st to join (9 sts)

Ch 1 and turn, dc in same st, 2dc in each st round, sl st to join (18 sts)

Ch1 and turn, 2dc in next st, 1 dc in next repeat round (not good enough to add up that far...)

Ch1 and turn, dc 1, 2dc, dc1 repeat round (basically, 1 1 2, 1 1 2...)

Keep going, increasing the number of stitches between the "double double" one until your circle is as big as you want it.

Purplepidjin thanks. I need my circle to be as big as probably tea cup plate or bigger. I also need to find out what your abbreviations mean Blush. I have got a book somwhere to look for it.

Ch = chain - 1 loop on hook, yarn over, pull through.

Sl st = slip stitch - push hook under next stitch, yarn over, bring loop through everything on hook

st = stitch - the top two little bits of yarn that make up the next stitch (can be quite hard to spot until you know what to look for iyswim?)

Dc = double crochet (single crochet in America) - push hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch only (2 loops on hook) yarn over, pull through both loops.

Oh, and the stuff in bold should have stars round to indicate that's the bit you repeat Blush

Ooh, I don;t have the patience for big stuff lol

A rug to play with toys on or a rug with a picture of a toy on?

Colourworld · 23/02/2011 23:09

Just a little rug. May be I would consider making a big rug one day. May be. Currently I have not ime for making big things. If I could make something and sell and make a profit then I would try. I have read here that people sometime spend money, time, creativity, love etc into the work and then they canot sell for the price they want because the buyers want something cheap.

HonestyBox thanks! How come I did not look for the flat circle on Lucy's blog?.
I have managed mine which is look pretty flat but I guess because the yarn is thick. It is good there are pictures as I am a beginner and find all abbreviations quite hard. Purplepidjin was very helpful too.
Many thanks! I
