I've made my ring and now have a chain leading on from the ring. I've looked at lots of videos but I cannot for the life of me work out what to do now.
Please help. I really want to be able to do this.
Thank you very much!

I've found this tutorial invaluable - good luck! www.purlbee.com/granny-square-project/

pipplin · 18/02/2011 19:59

Thank you. Silly question but: do put the yarn over the hook and push it through the whole in the ring? I just cannot work out where I am meant to go :(

sorry that link might be confusing as American use the term double crochet where we use treble.
In answer to your question, yes, put the yarn over the hook (bringing yarn towards your body), then put hook thru the hole.
Put yarn over hook again whilst its thru hole and pull it back thru hole: 3 stitches on hook.
Put yarn over hook again and pull thru middle 2 stitches: 2 stitches on hook.
Put yarn over hook again and pull thru 1st 2 stitches: 1 stitch on hook and you've just done your first treble stitch! Have a google around there's bound to be some simple tutorials out there Smile

Yarn over hook then push the hook under the top two but over the bottom loop of the foundation chain. Chain of 3 plus 2 treble crochet in the first one, three treble crochet in the next etc.

This stage is always a bloody nightmare because you have nothing to hold onto - It gets easier, I promise!

purpleknittingmum · 18/02/2011 20:39

sobs< wishes I could crochet!!

I have tried and tried! I think as I am a 'cack handed' knitter I can't seem to do crochet properly!

purplepidjin · 18/02/2011 20:44

purpleknittingmum, we need to meet - i'll teach you to crochet if you teach me to knit Grin

purpleknittingmum · 18/02/2011 20:51

purplepidjin - LOL!!

I have been helping a couple of colleagues to knit! They have now both bought that part work thing that is out

I can sort of do it, but I just did a chain of about 10 or 20 and did some rows of double crochet and then triple crochet. Apparently I was doing a good job. I don't wrap the wool round my fingers and find it hard to hold the hook, the work and do the stitch!

pipplin · 18/02/2011 20:54

Oh my, right I will have a go tomorrow and report back. Wish I could it now but have DS on me ill but asleep.
You are so right purplepidjin I was looking at it, thinking that cant be right, where's the hole etc.

Ok I think I may need to start again as I have too many on my chain. Could you, if you don't mind purplepidjin help me do the ring bit. I think my first and current attempt was purely by luck.
Do you: put the yarn over the hook and then pull through the chain making a semi circle then yarn over hook through the first stitch?
I am finding this quite difficult :(

Here's the step-by-step instructions, apologies if I'm being patronising

Right handed:

Tie a slip knot

Insert hook into loop and tighten. Hold hook in right hand.

Wrap yarn twice around left little finger and over left forefinger. Hold tail from knot between thumb and middle finger of left hand.

Use right hand to maneouvre (sp?) hook so that it catches the yarn and pull back to position (yarn over). Pull through original loop (chain). Repeat until you have 4 loops making a tail.

Pick up knot end of yarn. Insert hook so that there are two bits of yarn on the outside and one on the inside. Yarn over so there are 2 loops on the hook. Pull through both hooks (Slip stitch)

Chain 2.

Yarn over. Insert hook under the nearest 2 bits of yarn. Yarn over. Back through. Yarn over. Pull through first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Pull through remaining two loops on hook (treble crochet). Repeat.

Treble crochet three in next two loops (stitch). And the next, then the last. Slip stitch to join to the first chain.

HTH??

Yarn over.

pipplin · 18/02/2011 21:08

Fantastic! Not at all patronising I need very thorough instructions!
I was a very cack hander knitter. I could only purl and tbh I needed supervision. I'm really hoping crochet is more my thing.
Thank you so much. I will report back tomorrow :)

purpleknittingmum · 18/02/2011 22:17

ooo, you hold the wool with the LEFT hand?

I always use my right hand for putting the wool over

purplepidjin · 19/02/2011 07:17

Good luck, Pipplin. I'll be back tonight after work to see how you got on Grin

Purple, I'm right handed so put the wool over my left and move the hook around. Forefinger moves up and down to adjust tension...

It's confusing because the instruction is "yarn over" - it's actually "use hook to pick up yarn"! Left hand barely moves till the end of a row.

Chinwag · 19/02/2011 17:11

Try this. It is in slow motion. This woman has LOADS of these tutorials. I think she is amazing.

cheekyweebesom · 19/02/2011 18:48

Yes to youtube videos, I used these and sat practising as it ran (over and over again) - and also great instructions and patterns at Attic24 - one of my favourite blogs. Yummy colours!

pipplin · 19/02/2011 20:50

Thank you all, purplepidjin I think, I think I've almost mastered it. I just need to have a few more practice runs.
Unfortuntely DS has been a little tink today and this evening. He is still awake so no crochet fun for me this evening :(

Will definitely look at those videos, slow motion is what I need. I swear I could pick stuff much quicker pre children!

Well, today (at work Grin) I made a shortied suit with matching hat and bootees - smaller than a biro Shock but much fun Grin I love tiny projects because they take less time. I don't have the patience for big blankets!!

Will post pics at www.facebook.com/mimapants there's some up already

pipplin · 19/02/2011 21:47

Aw those clothes are very cute and so small.
I need to go to work so I can enjoy a whole hour of a lunch break in total peace.

OP posts:
purplepidjin · 19/02/2011 22:19

I don't get a break in a 12 hour shift.

I work in residential care, and often sit in with a resident and crochet while chatting!

pipplin · 20/02/2011 00:30

Oh and there's me going on about an hour's break! Sorry!

I taught myself how to crochet granny squares by watching you tube videos on this blog

It is very easy to follow and shows the absolute basics like how to even hold your wool and make a slip knot!

I would also like to second a vote for Attic 24 as it is fabulous and so inspiring!

Good luck with your crocheting!

purplepidjin · 20/02/2011 07:06

I don't know if it helps, but Lymington Library are having a beginners crochet session on March 2nd (?) in the afternoon. Anything like that near you?

Chinwag · 20/02/2011 21:41

A 3rd vote for attic 24. I have been doing her ripple blanket. It's lovely.
