Is this expensive? (fabric)

Have been looking for some fabrics to make some bits for my baby son and am a complete novice. Absolutly clueless.

Found a seller that does FQ bundles and have fell in love with a set of fabrics, theres 7 different designs and you get 2 FQs of each and its £42 delivered.

Does that sound about right? its really nice fabric i think!

See I went to my local fabric shop and there it was all £5 or £6 per meter with a huge width but they had no fabrics that I liked, it was all very old fashioned stuff nothing bright or funky, seems like the nice stuff only comes in FQs and seems pricey.

Or is it not pricey? lol

Have you looked at ClothKits?

TotorosOcarina · 15/02/2011 09:00

what are cloth kits?

here it's adorable.

Like you, I would like to make some clothes, but don't really know where to start, and from what I've seen dressmaking can be very expensive.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 15/02/2011 09:05

Clothkits - never had the impression they're cheap.

I think it's great you want to make things for your DS. For me, (only ever made things on a small scale and a few years ago), liking the fabric was really important - if I was a bit meh about it I wouldn't feel the urge to finish the item.

And, if you can afford it, balance the cost against having to schlep round looking for a cheaper alternative you'll like as much and possibly settling for something mediocre.

Just my view fwiw.

TotorosOcarina · 15/02/2011 09:07

No, its not clothes I want to make, its simple cot bumper, matress cover etc.

I agree WWWY, I wouldn't be as excited about making bits if it were some fabric i wasn't too keen on.

Do you have the link TO?

HattiFattner · 15/02/2011 09:09

I get my fabric from here

6 FQs around £15 plus £3 delivery.

So yours looks a little on the expensive side to me. But hey,if you adore each and every one of those 7 FQs, then go for it!

TotorosOcarina · 15/02/2011 09:15

its this here

I don't like the red but she kindly offered to swap it so would be flannel stars instead

i think i'll get it, i really do like it, just worry that its not very much fabric and will be crap if i run out!

I like the combo....Its still only £2.80 a fq plus postage. Not unreasonable I think if you like it.

I've seen more pricey fq's in my time.

Do you need the bundle twice though? You could cut each piece in half and it should be enough maybe?

thenightsky · 15/02/2011 09:41

I love FQs - the fabrics are gorgeous.

Although I did make moses basket linings and cot bumpers from fabric bought on the local market.

TotorosOcarina · 15/02/2011 09:46

I've just found this!!

you think i should ge thaat for his duvet, ten a few FQs for bumper of the fabric i like best and then get a cheaper uniform colour from my local fabric shop for reverse of duvet and bumper?

ooo lovely!!!

Mollymax · 15/02/2011 15:57

I like the look of the mixed FQ, seem very reasonable in price, and would be exciting not knowing exactly what you are getting.
Happy Sewing.

HattiFattner · 15/02/2011 18:32

Damn you TotorosOcarina, I love that fabric-quick, hide the credit card!!

soccerwidow · 17/02/2011 11:00

also try seamstar fabricrehab for funky FQ bundles

Your bundles are probably about right in price - a metre of designer fabric is around £10 - £12+ a metre these days so around £2.50+ for a FQ is fairly standard.

MissLolita · 18/02/2011 14:41

Oh no! Why did you publish the link?? I've clicked on it now and I want everything!!!

£2.80 for a FQ is reasonable particularly and you can always buy some cheap plain coloured cottons to mis with the posh stuff to make it go further. I've managed to get some lovely brightly coloured plain cottons from local Indian shops as people buy the fabric to make saris.
