I have just started and blimey isn't it addictive.

Have only done bookmarks and earrings so far as i have no funds to buy anymore stuff yet, but hoping to have a go at making a tiara soon.

I am loving it, have never had a hobby before really, but I could sit for hours and do this. Only problem at the moment is that my dd's keep pinching what I have made lol. Even my mum nabbed some of the earrings for herself.

its very addictive Grin

I am always on the look out for beads and bits when I'm out and about.

I'm lucky in that my local library has stocked a fab range of crafting books and is now starting to run jewellery making courses.

Another good way to build up your stash is to ask friends and family to donate any unwanted or broken bits so you can recycle it. I would start with asking those piching your creations first Wink

TheOriginalNutcracker · 12/02/2011 10:49

Lol, good idea. I did use a few old bits of my own the other day.

What do you do with all of the stuff you make ?? I am planning giving some away as gifts for birthdays etc, but can see me ending up with a pile of stuff.

I'd ove to do a course but they scrapped my nearest one.

Yep, it's addictive, I bought far too much stuff I will never use Blush
But I have made loads, and the bits and pieces always come in handy - I wanted to wear a fab choker I hadn't worn in about 20 years, and it needed a new catch.
I had all the bits - and the tools Grin
The last things I bought were a couple of lengths of sterling silver wire - I made bangles with personalised charms for my friends' 40th birthday.
I've made bracelets, necklaces, earrings, even a ring!

frazzledblob · 12/02/2011 11:00

I have mainly focused on building up my stash so have'nt made loads Blush

I mainly make things as gifts, it was great at xmas time as I did'nt have to trawl the shops for gift ideas!

If I can get organised I might try and see if any will sell at the summer fete.

It would be nice to fund new purchases by selling a few bits but my main interest is in being able to learn how to do different items, hence my love of collecting hoarding crafting books and watching online tutorials Grin

oh and one of the best ways to learn any craft is to look on youtube so you don't always need a course to go on iyswim?

MadameOvary · 12/02/2011 11:03

One of the best things about it is you spot some overpriced tat and think "I could make that!"

MadameOvary · 12/02/2011 11:04

yes frazzled, Dr Google can tell you a lot! Smile
I have made so many mistakes tho, I learn a lot through trial error. Such as trying to solder silver with a soldering iron Blush

MadameOvary · 12/02/2011 11:05

trial AND error!

frazzledblob · 12/02/2011 11:06

LOL thats what DH says to me whenever i stray near the jewellery section. I do like looking for ideas and checking the sale items for anything I can rehash though.

frazzledblob · 12/02/2011 11:14

OMG soldering iron!

I want one!! I want to have a go at making my own beads etc but DH is not keen.
He flinched the other day upon seeing my metal clay jewellery book from the library Grin

Not sure whether he fears the cost of all this or that he thinks I going to burn the house down?!

MadameOvary · 12/02/2011 11:21

Soldering irons are so smelly, you really need a blowtorch if you're going to work with silver. They are fine for metal tho, and dont cost much AFAIK.
I'm nowhere near that stage yet, I prefer to muddle through and see what mess creation I come up with.

Mirage · 13/02/2011 20:56

I make jewellery too.I'm on my second beading course atm,and really enjoy it.I am putting stuff away as a lot of friends keep nagging me to have an 'at home sale' before Christmas this year.

I can't wait for garden fete season-you can get handfuls of old jewellery to break up and reuse, for pennies.

Have made some beads out of Fimo, but need to buy a pasta machine to make any more.

Siikibam · 25/02/2011 17:52

Ive been making jewellery a while too. More recently I'm into looming. Got a heap (ok slight exaggeration!) of pictures waiting to go on the loom. I'm addicted to beads!!!

MosaicTree · 28/02/2011 07:10

@TheOriginalNutcracker - YouTube and other on line videos can be a great source of 'how to' do something - do a google search for what you're thinkong of (or ecosia.org - more green search engine!!) and then see if it finds you any links. I'm a knitter and I've done this quite often when I've got stuck on something new - my mum lives too far away to ask and it doesn't translate well as something over the phone!

I make knitted necklaces and spiral brooches - I tried to upload some pics but it didn't quite happen - check out www.folksy.com/shops/MosaicTree and www.mosaictree.blogspot.com.

Its really incredible being creative - not only the different stages of creating something but I still get that 'wow did I really make that' feeling.

I give some of mine away as gifts - it was particularly useful for the Christmas just gone. I sell a few bits too.....and wear some - I'm the worst person for making things for myself though - I always seem to do them for everyone else first!

I really hope that you carry on enjoy doing it.

52Girls · 28/02/2011 07:20

Oh I do. I do, I do, I do!!

Just stay away from those clever folk who make art beads from glass or clay - you'll be ££££s lighter!!! I speak from experience!

I just made a necklace out of an old t shirt! Grin

Not sure it counts as real jewellery making though, as it wasn't metal.
