Can you crochet? I find hats easier to crochet than knit?

Just knit a rectangle, then fold it in half and sew down the edges (honestly not difficult) to make a really cute hat with corners. You can attach pom poms to the corners if you're feeling cutesy.

I would try casting on about 30 stitches (it will depend on your tension and how big you want the hat - you can experiment a bit) and knit in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) or even garter stitch (knit every row) for about 20-25cm, then cast off. Now fold your rectangle so the cast on and cast off edges are together and the hat is "inside out", and sew down the two sides (at the ends of the rows) - don't worry about being too neat becuase when you turn it the right way it won't show. Ta-dah!

When you get more confident, you can try decreasing stitches to get a bit of shaping near the crown.

Good luck.

Yes, corcheting a hat is much easier, you can work in a round, if you can knit you'll be able to pick up crochet easy enough, loads of tutorials on youtube and ravelery for patterns :)

Hi. I can't advise on crochet as, to date, this skill has completely flummoxed me!

But, knitting baby hats - I do one for 0-6 months - to be honest, its more of 3-6 months than a new born. I use cotton rich wool - not cheap but comes in lovely colours and isn't itchy is baby has eczema etc.

Size 4 mm needles, cast on 76 stitches. I do the first 3cm in garter stitch. Then do stocking stitch for another 13cm or so. Cast off and then sew up side and along the top. Its called a 'cat eared' hat. AS you get ore practised, there's other things you can do, such as stripes or casting off in a different colour.

To see some pics have a look at www.folksy.com/shops/MosaicTree and click on baby hats. Hope that you enjoy knitting.

BUnderTheBonnet that is genius!!

I am knitting a stocking stitch scarf for a friend's baby as my first ever practise piece, but in a quandary about the rolling effect...perhaps I'll just transform it into a hat! And make a scarf to go with it in garter stitch.

Thank you :)
