Handmade wedding gift inspiration?

Hi all

My brother and future SIL are getting married in May and I want to make them something as a gift - but can't seem to get inspired.

I am a cardmaker and a novice sewer (I have a sewing machine), and I can also crochet, but would also happily try a new craft.

I don't think I'm quite up to a quilt which would be the obvious choice - so does anyone have any lovely ideas?

Budget for materials about £40.

Thanks in advance

About 25 years ago a friend and I bought a "pattern book", cloth and embroidery threads and between us did a counted cross stitch sampler thingy for another friends wedding which we then put in a nice frame. Counted cross stitch is simple but the finished thing was impressive.

It was obviously a success as it still hangs in our friends house to this day despite numerous house moves!

A cross-stitch sampler did cross my mind actually. Hmmmm...

you can do a small quilt that can be used as a wall hanging. My MiL does these as gifts for momentus occasions.

I had some lovely patchwork cushions from MiL for our lounge, it's a simple hexagon pattern with Moda fabric and though they aren't obviously wedding memoirs, they are quite nice to have on display and suitable for a modern couple.

My brother gave us a voucher to have our favourite wedding photo turned into a canvas, which was really nice and hangs in the hallway. It was nice that we got to choose, as SiL chose the photos for the canvas she gave us and they aren't my favourites, so they hang in the spare room :)

I also like the idea of a small quilt as a wall hanging but would have no idea where to start.

What about sewing their wedding details on material and then framing it? (Their names, date of marriage, location...) Then you could frame it.

Quiet sentimental and personal to them.

Probably my favourite wedding present was from my brother.

He went to our church previous to our wedding day and took a photo at the exact time that we were getting married (there was a clock at the top of the church) and then had it developed in black and white and framed really nicely.

Bowled us over and is now pride of place.

Check out the wedding section of www.etsy.com for inspiration. I got married in June and found quite a few bits on there which I copied was inspired by!

something like the patchwork quilt in the link, its a traditional wedding gift in a lot of cultures, not just Amish (as the link) & of course colours & cloths could be chosen to suit their decor :)

Whoops, sorry missed your not being up to a quilt line Blush

I've also taken photos & made them into gifts before, printed onto transfer paper, then ironed onto cloth & turned into cushions, mine were backed & framed on the front with a contrast darker cloth, with a velvet ribbon trim framing the printed panel & running right of to the edge at each corner & filled with poly beads to make the whole thing washable
they seemed to down well & now sit on the couples bed :)

What about a heart shaped pillow for their bed? You could embroider it with the date of the wedding and use crochet and lots of pretty ribbon as decoration.

Or make some bunting using the letters of their names.

Or a twig wreath.

or as you are a "card maker" offering to supplier everything & then make the wedding invitations for them as a Wedding gift....I've offered similar in the past & had my hand snapped off, so it might go down well??

iloveblue · 26/01/2011 20:27

Invitations already sorted - I designed them and we set up an assembly line with family and made them - but would have been a good idea. Smile
I'm intrigued by the idea of a mini-quilt as a wallhanging - does anyone know of any good tutorials, blogs that might help?

Decorate a frame and then start to fill it with memories of your brother and SILs live so far. You'll have to ask her family for some momentoes. Could even be an old school drawing or a bus ticket, anything that invokes memories.

Design it landscape so he is on one side and she is on the other then leave lots of space in the middle for them to add their lives together over the coming years.

Sounds like you are a craft person so you your card skills could make this beautiful.

I made these cute crochet wedding bunnies for my friend's wedding last year, it's a free pattern and I added some little glass beads to them to make them a bit more 'finished'
