He's very cute! Whatcha stuck on?

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 16:43

I think I have worked it out. The instructions have definitely been written by someone who sews a lot for people who sew a lot. Who knew a giraffe's head had a gusset?

Spoke too soon. Stuck again. Maybe DH should have just bought me a ready down Giraffe.

A gusset is a thing like the bit in your pants between your legs - it makes the material the right shape.

There will most likely be a bit with a point at one end. you attach that into a V bit, and it makes the piece of material get wider...

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 17:27

I have just attached the eyes. I am not confident.

I have a tutorial for a sock giraffe if it all goes horribly wrong

Sock Giraffe

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 19:36

I really should have ignored the instructions and did it how I thought as DH is having to perform surgery as I seem to have sewn two legs together Hmm.

pipplin · 16/01/2011 19:16

Oh good luck Fab! Looks very cute though!
Tiz- is your giraffe as easy as a monkey? DS would love it, also is suitable for one suffering from pregnancy brain?
Sorry for the hijack Fab, hope DH fixed him/her.

pipplin · 16/01/2011 19:17

I obviously mean suitable for me to make. Oh dear!

IAmReallyFabNow · 16/01/2011 19:47

Okay, not going well. Carefully sewed the legs together instead of to each separate piece. Unpicked all that. Unpicked nearly all of it. Sewn the legs together and stuffed them in the hope it will help. Struggling with the chest gusset. Packed it in for the night.

No apology needed, no hijack Smile.

Meh, do it your way. The instructions were probably originally written in Greek, translated into Japanese and then converted to English via google Grin

IAmReallyFabNow · 17/01/2011 07:55

Grin.

I have emailed to ask for more instructions so we will see if they reply.

Thats quite a difficult first soft toy project to take on, so kudos to you for sticking at it,

I have an old book "the big book of soft toys" that was mine as a kid & helped teach me to sew & I'm using it now to teach DD, theres a similar, if not the same pattern in it, but I would never of suggested DD tackle it first, as I know its a more difficult 1.....the one tip I would give, as you are getting confused & sewing things together that are not meant to go, would be to TACK it together by hand, with a very lose running stitch, before machining, that way you can be sure its right, & not a nightmare to unpick if its not......also with DD, we are writing in chalk on the back of each piece what they are, that seems to help her get them in the correct place.....helped me as a Kid too

IAmReallyFabNow · 17/01/2011 17:03

Thanks for that. Very disappointed that the company haven't acknowledged my email, never mind offered advice. I will have another go later in the week.

pipplin

I would say it's slightly harder than the sock monkey for one tricky bit (sewing the two socks together at the neck) but the rest is very similar.
