Is there a "ravelry" for dressmaking/quilting?

I don't know who it was but someone here recommended Ravelry to me and I've since become obsessed. Knitted 2 hats and 3 scarves (including 1 lace scarf) and I'm ready to move on to larger projects. That site is a godsend.

Well, I got a sewing machine for Christmas and I'm keen to get started (I'm a complete beginner tho), would like to make a circle skirt and a basic quilt to start with. Does anyone know of an internet resource like Ravelry but for sewing?

My new machine is a Husqvarna E20, I hope it is okay, got it for 100 quid new.

That's exciting about your new sewing machine.

I have almost no experience of the online crafting world (and only found Ravelry yesterday) but I'm giving this a bump as I'd love to know the answer myself!

www.patternreview.com for dressmaking pattern reviews and forums.

Happy to help!

Burda.com or Burdastyle.com - they give you free patterns! And members upload their own and there's loads of very helpful chat threads. I think its fab.

I was wondering this so thanks for asking.
Have looked at the suggested ones in the past but it just isn't quite the same.

Silver - nothing is the same as Ravelry!!

Silver1 · 12/01/2011 00:53

starfishmummy I can hope. I have to say there seems to be better sewing blogs than knitting ones so maybe in part that is why.

Can I say I woke up in the night last night and wondered this very question.

OP, I know it's probably not exactly what you're looking for, but I'm mildly addicted to this site. It's crammed with ideas and tutorials but I have to admit that it's not the easiest site to navigate. Good for browsing and inspiring as it seems mainly to gather together all sorts of different projects and then link to the sites they came from, usually with instructions. Maybe worth a look, anyway.

HonestyBox · 12/01/2011 12:53

Ha ha ha, seems that I am not the only one wondering along these lines. Thank you for the input, I've had a look on some of your links but I'll agree that there is nothing exactly like ravelry. I suppose dressmaking is quite a different enterprise, knitting translates really well to the web as the instructions are generally just text. The great thing about Ravelry is that you can see what people made from the same pattern using different yarns etc. and they upload really great photos. The pattern review one is a bit like that but I find it hard to navigate.

I'm going to take a dressmaking course but can't do so for a while. Hope I can get by on the internet til then. Any links to good blogs most welcome by the way. Thanks again.

How weird, i only thought about the same question last week! Thanks for posting this honestybox. I'm a complete beginner, so i feel like i 'don't belong' in many of the sites, apart from this one!
