Patchworkers and sewing fanatics! What would be a brilliant gift for my sister?

Im just doing an amazon order of other stuff, trying to do all my shopping on line this year.

My sister has recently got back into sewing in a big way after a break of some years, she's really got into patchwork particularly. I want to get her something sewing/patchwork related, maybe a really nice book or two? She loves all the kath kidston type stuff...

Can you suggest either equipment or books if you can think of any that are covetable for a patchworker? I can afford up to £30...

search on amazon for Cath Kidston, she has a couple of books - one called Sew! which looks good, and I think there's another of home related projects.

Maybe some nice fabric that would inspire her? All sewing people covet new fabrics! Look at the ones online on the Liberty site, or antique fabrics, there are loads of good sites around

This site is very lovely. Could you get her a nice patchwork book from Amazon and maybe a fabric pack in colours you know she likes? They stock some wonderful fabrics. I'd be chuffed to bits if you bought that for me.

wifeofdoom · 08/12/2010 22:29

Sew is a bit basic if she does lots. There;s a lovely one called 'sew childrens clothes' if she has young girls. Or a clothkits dress/skirt for her or kids?

Else a sewing box - John Lewis do nice ones.

a lovely selection of good quality cottons (guterman, pure cottons silks, glitteries) done up as a bunch of flowers.

Moda do Jelly rolls, layer cakes and charm packs in their lovely fabrics, perhaps some of these?

A book or two on quilting Kaffe Fassett has some gorgeous books.
I also like The Gentle Art of Quiltmaking and Material Obsession. Stash-buster quilts looks nice as well.

Tone Finnanger does some lovely books as well more generally for home decor and Sew Sunny Homestyle is my favourite but I also have Sew Pretty Homestyle. These use patchwork weight fabrics.

ah thanks you lovely people. I appreciate the help!

right I really am clueless! I think I want to go with fabric, she'll love that. If I got this
this
and this

would that be enough to do something with?

yes, I'm sure she would like that.
The thing is about patchwork, you build up a 'stash' of fabrics and then when you are looking for a particular colour for a project you go through your stash. So even if she didn't use it immediately it would be certain to come in useful. And tbh most patchworkers just like having nice fabric Grin

geraldinetheluckygoat · 09/12/2010 21:01

Thanks Seth, she does keep making me look at her fabrics Grin Ok Ill go for that then I think.

That would be a lovely present. As Seth said, a fantastic 'stash' builder. I would love a gift like that. Wht a lovely sister you are. Xmas Smile

KnottyLocks · 10/12/2010 07:43

Lots of 'love' in that post. Xmas Grin

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/12/2010 15:33

Can I be your sister? Xmas Envy

Has she seen Miracle Fabric Sheets
She can then print some of her own designs. The material is 100% cotton.
I made some cushions for my DD printing pictures of her favorite pop star on it.

tyler80 · 11/12/2010 22:00

Depending on what she has already, I think I'd opt for a bundle of fabrics. Fabric rehab have a good selection of bundles. But then get something practical as well, like a rotary cutter and/or a cutting mat.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 12/12/2010 10:26

If you like, Quiltingmoomin, but it means you get roped in to making cake decorations and helping me with cake shows on the run up to christmas! Grin
thanks Bruffin, I never knew such a thing existed Grin
Tyler, OMG fabric rehab is amazing, exactly up my street, lovely fabrics! I may have to get one of the little bundles involving apples and owls too, in the hope she makes something for ME with them!! I THINK she was a cutting board, and cutter.......i may have to stealthily ask my aunt who she patchworks with, if she needs anything else! Am starting to get obsessed now, as I know she will combust with joy when she opens her pressie!

Patchwork Template Sets might be another option. They're something that's nice to have but that I wouldn't necessarily buy myself as I try to make do without.

Quiltingmoomin · 12/12/2010 14:55

I'm always up for learning a new skill!

dizzyday07 · 12/12/2010 15:11

If you still have some pennies left you could get her a subscription to (or just buy a single issue of) Fat Quarterly which is an e-zine (online magazine) that one of my good friends helps produce.

Here is her blog

geraldinetheluckygoat · 13/12/2010 15:46

Thanks guys for the further suggestions. All ordered now....BUT will keep in mind for her birthday! Smile

MissLolita · 17/12/2010 21:51

Sorry, bit late on this one and I can see that you've ordered but I thought I would add that if your sister likes Cath Kidston she might like Amy Butler who is an American designer - www.amybutlerdesign.com/main.php?fl=0
she has some books which you can buy on Amazon which are quite a bit more advanced that CK ones (I agree with the above comment - if she can already sew the CK book will be no more than pretty pictures) and have some lovely patchwork type projects.
Sorry it's late but hope it helps!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/12/2010 21:38

Thank you Miss Lolita, I will take a look :)
