My sister asked for a laptop cover for her birthday. Easy, I tohught, but she requested a seperate compartment for the charger to go in.

I tihnk I have gone about this all wrong

I have been using this method, but thought I'd make the flap seperately like I do on my messenger bags I make.

Well, have made the inside, and a seperate section for the charger, and mave made the outside now but I can't put them right sides together to sew the top up and add the flap, because the seperate compartment is in the way Shock

How the hell do I do it? bias binding the top? But then what about the flap closure?

Gah, I really am out of my depth and need help.

I still have time to unpick the seperate compartment and do away with it if needs be.

Any ideas will be gratefully recieved!

oh, and I added sides and a bottom by sewing the corners at right angles, unlike in that tutorial.

Would photos help?

Please, anyone?

I am ready to get to work with my seam ripper and remove the offending section.

Photos would help, I think I see what you mean, but it does sound quite complicated. Is there any way you could attach the flap to the outside by putting right sides together and sewing from the inside, then hand sewing the edge of the flap lining to the bag lining? (sorry that might be totally unhelpful, because I'm not sure I fully understand the problem )

Love your advent calendar by the way Smile

Thanks kurrikurri.

Ok, will attempt some photos.

I tihnk it will be ok if I bias bind the whole lot, wrong sides together, with the flap on the outside?

I think the binding would work. Could you make your own bias binding out of the fabric you've used for the bag?

overmydeadbody · 05/12/2010 19:06

Ok, photos on profile page.

Luckily I have some gray bias binding that would work, or some other bias binding that I can also use to make a handle.

Why do I always make things more complicated than they need to be?Hmm

thank you kurri, for helping me through this!

Having seen the photos, I think the bias binding will work. the only other thing I could think of would be to fold in the raw edges on the lining and the bag, then pin together and sew close to the edge on the outside, making the seam external IYSWIM and it would give a little grooved edge all round. You could maybe try each method on a spare bit of fabric and see which looks best.

Don't worry, I often end up complicating things for myself Grin I think your bag will look great when it's finished.

overmydeadbody · 05/12/2010 19:30

Ah yes, I could do that, then hand stitch around the seperate section, that might be easier than bias binding actually, I am not very good with bias binding at the best of times Blush

Good luck Smile

This might be a silly idea - but could you unpick the bottom of the lining turn it inside out sew the top bit all together, turn it right side in then hand sew the bottom?

Or have I misunderstood completely?

overmydeadbody · 05/12/2010 19:49

Katymac it's one strip, sewn up both sides, then gussetted, the seperate section for the charger is a completely seperate tube of material, otherwise your idea would have worked.

I have unpicked the stitches that where attaching the side of the main section to the side of the charger section, pressed them with a hem facing each other, and hand stitched together again.

I have also now pressed a hem around the lining and the outside, and will sew them together, wrong sides together, and hand sew around the charger section.

Phew.

First though, I am going to have some supper Grin
