The actual cake or just the decoration?

KatyMac · 15/11/2010 20:34

Dear god I hadn't thought of that

No, I checked, just the icing

Buy lots of smarties, ice the cake with white icing and make interesting geometric patterns with the orange and green ones.

Eat the other colours of smarties for my trouble.

Well, thats what I'd do Grin

Shop bought fondant icing. Colour one packet green, Roll out and roll onto cake. Colour other packet orange. Roll out and cut swirly shapes. Attach shapes to green icing with buttercream icing glue. All icing. Two colours. Done!

Oh that sounds doable

She wants a fruit cake but her friends won't like it so I have to make it chocolate

Or she might like a lion cake....sigh

could I make a mini fruit cake?

You can make mini fruit cakes, but by the tie you bought all the different fruits etc (unless you have them in already) it might be cheaper to buy a fruit cake and cut to shape?

KatyMac · 16/11/2010 11:00

Have all the fruits (we bake a lot) but we have always gone for quantity .......

What about making cup-cakes??, you can find pretty cool colours in - blank on wordBlush those paper cup thingies - I've seen green polka dot ones recently, & have just bought some orange tiger stripe ones, even found skull & bones & flag trims for DDs recent bithday Grin

colour your butter cream icing to the opposite colour of what your paper cup thingy isBlush pipe onto cake, you can decorate with whatever you like, including edible green or orange glitter or gloss spray

you can buy cheap white card 3 tier cup cake display stands, you can paint & decorate this as you please -Morrisons have them ATM, along with a good assortment of chemical free food colours & decorations, but I'm sure most supermarkets have them ATM too

PS if it makes you feel any better about the odd colour choice, my DD wanted similar & she was 8 Confused she got a stand full of chocolote skull/bones cupcakes some with green, some with red icing, topped with choc curls & pirate flags :)

My DC often asks me for what seems to be impossible cakes. I have found the Wilton concentrated colour to be really good as I can paint with it.

Hobbycraft online have quite a few orange a green things to decorate cakes - may give you some ideas even if you decide to get it elsewhere.

If you are aiming for bright/deep colours then get the ready-coloured fondant icing rather than colouring it yourself. I coloured some icing for DD's 5th birthday cake to get a deep red (for Ariel's hair) and the icing was inedible!

My mum is going to Tesco to get a minicake to decorate

Orange & green icing is ordered on Next day delivery (Thursday Sad)
