I want to make some nice xmas decorations out of felt as I am a complete novice and have been told that they are easy.

However, not sure what to start with so...

  1. ideas needed please
  2. do I use glue or hand stitch?
  3. where can I buy some reasonably priced felt in the coloured needed?

thanks

Can you do a stocking shape?

Red front, green back.

DEcorative stitching of snowlfalkes, stick on sequins, stick cotton wool at the top.

Glue both sides together, and loop a bit of ribbon on one top cormer as a hanger.

A few simple shapes here, you could also add a holly leaf shape, and a basic Christmas tree shape.

I would personally sew, but that's just my preference, I'm sure glueing would be fine too.(Esp. for things like sequins and sparkles)

Sometimes craft shops/haberdashery departments do little bundles with squares of different coloured felt.

Kurri - I had to sew blanket stitch on my felt stocking at school, never again! But my parents still put it on their tree.

I love these guys for felt - it's fantastic quality although not bargain basement prices. 100% wool felt rather than mixed. THe 3d shapes are lovely too. I've just got some hearts and stars in red and white to string together to make a garland advent calendar.

Good Homes magazine (I think) has a supplement for making Christmas stuff and that includes felt decorations. Useful for templates and ideas.

I got very excited when I saw this. It doesn't look bad - all straight lines and pockets!

do make sure that, wherever you go to buy it, you ask the assistant in a very loud voice "can I get felt here?"

...take your dcs along to add to the fun Grin

LOL at SpringHeeledJack....!

To be serious....I wouldn't even worry about blanket stitch if you don't feel up to it; just a simple running stitch around the edges would do fine, maybe in a contrasting colour (white on red, etc etc). Looks really effective. The shops are full of felt baubles this year and I keep looking at them in amazement at the prices. So much cheaper and more fun to make them.

sillytart · 22/11/2010 22:27

Thanks everyone, I went and had a look at some decorations at the weekend for ideas and I agree evenkeel the prices are unbelievable!!

My next question is how do I do a blanket stitch?

springheeledjack - LOL!! I will let you know what sort of response I get when I ask that question Grin

should be a youtube video on it.

This felt ornament is really pretty and simple. Unfortunately I don't think I have felt that's good enough quality to do it.
