You can 'un-knit' and do it again if your mistake was recent.

booyhoo · 11/11/2010 22:07

i realised at the end of the row so yes recent. jsut half tehj row, about 15 stitches. how do i unknit it back onto teh other needle?

To un-knit, you put your left needle through the loop under the first stitch on your right needle, let the first stitch (the last stitch you did) fall off the right needle and pull the yarn.

TheFarSide · 11/11/2010 22:10

Pull them out one by one and as you do so put them back on the left needle so you don't drop any. When you put them back on the left needle, don't twist them.

KnitWitch probably has a video on the subject on YouTube.

thank you. will try youtube for a demo.

Let me know if that makes sense and if you manage it!

It is also possible to change knits and purls several rows later by deliberately dropping a stitch down to the point you want to change, and picking them back up using a crochet hook. Whether you stick the crochet hook in from the front or back will determine whether the result is a knit or a purl. Clever!

yep that worked!! your last post however, is waaay over my head. amateur here!! Smile

I am quite an amateur myself. I am only on my 6th project. I have used the crochet hook trick many many times (because I make a lot of mistakes Grin)

I learned everything I know about knitting from this book

booyhoo · 11/11/2010 23:09

if anyone is is still around, could you tell me why when i purl a row and the go to knit again i have more stitches than i did originally? what am i doing wrong? it's messing up my pattern.

Booyhoo - not sure, unless you are sometimes not slipping the stitch off the hook and are ending up purling it twice (kind of increasing by accident)?

BigZing - that crochet technique to change knit to purl sounds very advanced to me. I just end up unpicking everything and sometimes starting again because I can't pick up the stitches!

TheBigZing · 12/11/2010 00:10

WRT having more stitches - when you finish a row and turn your work around, make sure your yarn is not twisted the wrong way around the needle because this can make the first stitch look like two stitches. You then mistakenly knit both, creating a new (unwanted) stitch.

I am honestly not an advanced knitter! The crochet hook thingy was just something I learned from the book I linked to earlier. It has been an absolute lifesaver on many occasions, helping to quickly correct my many fuck ups occasional errors.

HappyAsASandboy · 12/11/2010 08:17

I sometimes create extra stictches when switching from knit to purl by not bringing the yarn through between the needles when you change stitch (so the yarn ends up going round the needle making a new stitch). It'll only be this if you[re knitting and purling on the same row though, not if your knitting a while row and then purling a while row ....

I was about to recommend the crochet tip too - it really is easy but nervewracking ++. I learnt it from this book

www.amazon.co.uk/Knit-Fix-Problem-Solving-Knitters/dp/1596680113/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1289550086&sr=8-1

The book is great at simplifying and explaining things - no patterns, just useful tips.

booyhoo · 12/11/2010 12:37

happyasasandboy that's what it was. i googled and saw what i was doing wrong. thank you all. I'm sure I'll be on again soon for more advice!
