Making fleece trousers for a toddler

I want to make some fleece trousers for DD (3). Can I just cut out two trouser shapes and sew them together, sticking a bit of elastic in the top? DH thinks it needs to be a bit more complicated than that to allow for the crotch etc.

The crutch shape is difficult to explain,kind of;

.........
..........
...........
..........
.........
........
The back waistband,where the centre seam is, is higher then the front,and the depth of the crutch too- this allow for bum cheeks /sitting down etc..

If you get a pair of trousers, fold them in half so they lie flat, you can cut a pattern out of newspaper (dont forget to allow extra for seams).You do the same for the other side(i.e front then back).. sew up a rough version in say an old sheet-to see if it's right,and alter the pattern if you need to, before you cut into your fabric..

It sounds complicated! but its' worth doing,once you have the pattern,you can make loads!

as JellyKat has already said, basically your DH is right, the back & front crotch are very different shapes, to allow for better fit & comfort especially when sitting, crawling etc.

Personally I'd recommend, taking an old pair of her PJs, or jersey pants, even a small pair (something with a similar fit to what you want would be best, to save you having to make too many adjustments)

Measure the old pair, & a pair that fits now, then undo the seams of these, press flat pin to paper, news, brown or wall paper are fine, increase the size all round as needed to make them fit now, so add extra width to the center of the leg, & as above 1cm seam allowance.

When sewing, stitch back & front crotch first, then start at 1 ankle & go around the whole inleg seam to the other ankle in 1 go. :)

Made By Petchy has a great tutorial , I've successfully made a couple of pairs for DS using this.
