I'm a knitter really, but I have just bought a sewing machine - total novice. Can anyone recommend some good websites - tutorials, patterns, that kind of thing? Also, is there a website that is the sewing equivalent of ravelry?

The nearest thing to Ravely I know of is Patternreview. The various sewing groups on flickr are also good for inspiration. What kinds of things are you interested in sewing?

Alsorts, but mainly simple home furnishing stuff as a starter - cushion covers etc. Hoping to be able to make some curtains at some point.

www.sewmamasew.com

Have a search through the blog - there are tutorials or links to tutorials for just about anything

Thanks, they both look good, will have to have a read. Can you suggest any books I might want to put on my christmas list?

[www.mysewingcircle.com is an exact equivalent of ravelry but it's just starting out. The uk sewers group is v friendly.

A good book for making curtains is The Complete Home Decorating Book .

Sew! by Cath Kidston has lots of cushion covers in, as well as aprons, toys, quilts, bags etc. Most of the projects are suitable for a beginner.

I totally love "Sew it up" by Ruth Singer. Good quality basic information, in depth master classes, good photos plus quite a few nice patterns. I use it almost everytime I sew!
