Christmas Crafts for under 3's.....Help?

I have had the bright idea of making these for my parents (courtesy of a mn thread iwilldothis & SprinkleDust - Many Thanks)

So I have pegs - how do I fix them to the backing?
What do I use for the backing?
Would they be better on hooks or on magnets? Or should I fix both so the parent can choose?

Craft skills need to be fairly basic as I have about 30 to supervise making......

I though to print out 3 or 4 different sets of 'words' in a variety of colours for the children to chose

Any thoughts or suggestions?

they look like they are probably made from MDF, but unless you know someone who can cut down a sheet of MDF for you then you are probably better off with chipboard or "greyboard" - you can get it in A4 sheets & cut it down to size with a sharp knife (probably 4 out of an A4 sheet)

You should be able to stick the peg on with PVA glue (but it needs to be left alone by little fingers to allow it to dry! Grin)

Magnets would be easier as you can buy adhesive strips of magnetic tape by the roll. Alternatively instead of the loop for hanging (which would be difficult to fix securely on chipboard) you could punch a couple of holes on the top edge & add a ribbon for hanging.

Hope that helps ?

(A friend bought DD one of those last Christmas for her artwork, didn't realise they were £11 Shock)

Hello,

Do you mean you are going to have 30 children making this at once?

The one in the link is probably wood, so I am not sure how the children could make this?

You could use squares of stiff cardboard, then you could put hole punch a hole in the top then give each child a length of string, you could use the brown twine type, then children could tie a loop in the string. To hold the peg you could cut a slot in the card and put the peg into the slot, so the bottom of one half of the peg is on the back of the card and the other on the front, so it would hold itself. then you could let them chose what to stick on the front of the peg, you could have bits to chose from or let them cut out of magazines, or make their own shapes.

Hope that Helps

Yes, I was thinking card rather than wood

The cut is a good idea - I'd been thinking about glue dot's. Maybe tying them on might work. Needs experimentation

They will make it one or two at a time (my nerves won't cope with anything else)

I have some great silver card stars plus some small coloured sticky stars

Ribbon is a great idea plus I can put the magnet on too

How about these?

How would I fix the peg on?
& the hook?

Well you could lie the peg on then mark two dots either side, then make two holes right through each mat either side, then you could thread string, or more ribbon through and tie it behind.

But it would depend how was it was to make the hole through.

That's fairly complicated for under 3s - I guess I'd be doing that bit

or you could use plain "beermats" like these? I've made mini books from them before they are fairly sturdy.

KatyMac · 23/10/2010 21:57

Great - perfect

Thanks - glue dots will fix stuff to them I'm sure

I think thats the one to go with, they could draw on those too, good find BetsyBoop!

KatyMac · 27/10/2010 08:09

I ordered them - but I ordered 2 lots to take advantage of the p&p; because I'm sure I can find another craft for them

BUMP
If you'll forgive a tiny bit of bias - my DH has just done an iPhone app (as an evening hobby) which is called Craft4Kids - just out in the app store, only 59p, and has fifteen activities to do, like Lollipop Santa and Christmas lanterns. Its great! :)
