My mum is BIG on patchwork. She made me a beautiful Sun Bonnet Sue blanket, which is cool and colourful without being ALL pink! You can try googling her, her patterns are quite popular. My mum made me a calendar one, with a Sue (the character) for each month...
eg: July was a bride
August she had a cake (my birthday)
April she had an umberella and a rain coat!

Really kitsch and different!

stacked coins strippy is an easy & popular pattern for baby quilts - eg here

I borrowed some books from the library to get me started, the first couple of quilts i just made up as I went along, then I did a beginners course.

this blog is fab and there are lots of tutorials (for modern style quilts) crazymom

and this one Moda Bake shop

You will be surprised just how easy even some of the most complicated looking patterns are!

I am currently working on this one but not as big. I cut some fabrics into 2.5 inch strips myself as the jelly rolls can be quite expensive. It is actually quite easy and would suit a beginner.

I love this one - really tempted to give it a go myself.

that's lovely! I just forwarded it to my mum with strict instructions on colours!

Library books are a good start.

If there's any danger of you wanting to do it more than once, it might be worth buying a cheap cutting mat and rotary cutter, it makes life a bit easier (although not absolutely essential).

Simple checks is a good way to start, and although there's lots of lining up of seams, lining them up does help keep your columns and rows together!

Google for quilt tutorials - lots of blogs have information on the various different stages of making up a quilt.

Try doing a black white and red quilt so the baby can distinguish the patterns - I love a chequerboard with hearts appliqued on every other square. Have fun!
